Let me add this: for years people have talked about me like I'm a science hater because I have been very vocally critical of astronomers and physicists who depend on colonial tactics to get their science done. But the reality is this machine that we fed was ALWAYS coming for us too, y'all.

Everyone knows about Ahmed al-Ahmad, the Syrian Muslim migrant who took down one gunman. Another man, a Middle Eastern refugee, ran into a firefight and kicked the gun away from the other gunman. Police shot him, and bystanders kicked him in the head while he was down, thinking he was the terrorist.

Underrated aspect of using those systems.
There's something else that I think is a highly underrated aspect of using AI run by companies. These things get all kinds of "instructions" that you can't see. There is no transparency around what companies like OpenAI do with your input. Or what additional context they send to the LLM.

If you replace woke/wokeness with decent/decency in almost any sentence it works
Conservatives rebranded bigotry and every time the media uses “wokeness” as a euphemism they are helping a movement that it quite literally erasing the history marginalized people’s role in American life.

Figured I’d wait to post anything for this, but I can’t tell you how excited I am for us to have the opportunity to be funded to do this work. We really do believe that our project connecting communities, digital archives of the early Black press, and human-AI systems will have a large impact
It has been so much FUN to think with @profdancy.bsky.social, @snblickhan.bsky.social , Tiffanie R. Smith, and @bcgl.bsky.social & many others. Getting to dream & plan alongside these courageous people has been a real ray of hope in this otherwise horrible moment.

Unfortunately, in US journalism it is considered neutral to spread a lie, but it is considered "biased" to call out a lie. So, there is a structural asymmetry that rewards colorful lies with virality.

I think the maddening thing here is many more critical folks who study info search, learning, etc could have (and have been) saying this. The process matters
Learning with AI falls short compared to old-fashioned web search
Doing the mental work of connecting the dots across multiple web queries appears to help people understand the material better compared to an AI summary.

Previously, these belief systems tended to collapse under their own weight. Contradictions and memory gaps made them hard to sustain. Now the AI removes that friction, it produces timelines, summaries, and "forensic" explanations on demand.
