In The Hobbit, Tolkien mentioned "giants" in an off-handed way. Some have said their inclusion is non-canonical. But it's clear to me etymologically that trolls and giants are of the same kind. Tolkien borrowed the word "Ent" from the Old English word for giant (cognate with Eoten/Jotun from Norse).
