The planned City of Vancouver budget in a nutshell.
A speaker in opposition to the budget says she found it disturbing to see up to 6 police officers surrounding one homeless man at a grocery store.

It’s clear Vancouver residents (42%) and businesses (37%) support a 5% property tax ⬆️. Sim has ignored this and now says additional engagement is a “waste of time.” I’d like to know how much money Sim has wasted with his political stunts, incl this regressive proposal and cost-breakdown of this mtng

“People who are getting clicks and likes online and [we have] a reactive government that is responding to the moral panic to avoid getting voted out … so we have policymakers with extremely liberal backgrounds doing extremely conservative things to retain their position of power,” Ranger said.
“Politicians need to do better, and this case is really, really clear on that.”

Harm reductionists explain a key victory, as a Supreme Court of Canada ruling affirms protection from possession arrests for people at an OD scene.

However it is quite a slap in the face to all those killed by police, an act of deep disrespect for life, and full of derision for disabled people in particular. I could have chosen to talk about so many other things but the stakes really are that high, have always been that high.

I deliberately included those things alongside the position that cops do not make us safer because it’s too often the case that victims of violence are used to uphold carceral systems. It is not surprising that an elected city councillor that used to be a cop would scoff at that. #VanPoli.

Chantelle Spicer, speaker 2, poverty reduction coalition. This will deepen economic divide. This should be about our values and priorities. This budget is about short term optics. Calls to not increase police budget which makes poverty worse. No correlation between increased funding +public safety.
