It doesn't actually matter if Chuck Schumer votes for this or not.

If he can't keep his caucus unified to protect healthcare for over 10 million Americans, he should resign as leader.

basically every 2024 truism is dead. Trump did not build a lasting multiracial coalition or turn young men into committed Republicans. You don’t need to cave on trans rights to win. The pundits have nothing left to tell you.

The problem with every post-Millennial generation is they got to go straight to high speed internet. Of course you'll get computer madness that way. Make them start with those old screeching modems and work their way up

last night as i was trying to wind down for bed i had a unified theory of what the fuck just happened, and i wrote it down, and filed it under "well, i can't talk about this on main without sounding insane until and unless the perp gets caught and is provably a groyper"

Journalism is RIPE for "pick me" types who desperately want to feel powerful by proximity.
One thing that has sort of surprised me is that it does really seem like the desire to be ruled by a powerful fascist daddy is stronger in the median elite journalist than in the median voter.

The American constitution is mostly the story of an aspiring democracy trying to be as free as it can get away with without the South rising up and murdering everyone. The notable exceptions are the Reconstruction Amendments, which stemmed from President Lincoln saying “You know what? Bet.”
In @nytopinion.nytimes.com

The Constitution “was not some kind of sacred compromise that came down a mountain on tablets,” and we should consider ourselves empowered to make dramatic changes to our political system, Osita Nwanevu says on this episode of “Interesting Times With Ross Douthat.”

A good read. We gotta have a plan, and this provides some good ones.
There's a long tradition at @prospect.org of discussing remedy rather than just criticism and complaint. In that spirit, co-founder Paul Starr lays out an agenda for changes in the law, the Supreme Court, and the Constitution that Trump has shown we need. It's today's featured story.
The Premature Guide to Post-Trump Reform
American history offers three general strategies of repair and renewal.

These guys are describing a real thing but it’s not the thing they think it is: they’re actually describing the absolutely enormous right-wing media ecosystem’s ability to blow up huge cultural outrages out of absolutely nothing, milking them to radicalize young men into racial and gender extremism
A message I just got from a buddy of mine, who’s a long time Democratic Party campaign consultant: “This Sydney Sweeney thing is the kind of thing that turns men away from our party. It’s why men think our party is weak & insane.”

My response to him? “Fuck yea it is. You are exactly right.”

"The most popular Democratic figures among this group of voters were Barack Obama... and Bernie Sanders, because they think he would have had a positive impact on the country as president and would have kept young people and low-income communities’ best interests at heart."

Ending partisan gerrymandering would go a long way to solving this problem, particularly in states like NC where gerrymandering allows a stacked conservative legislature to take over the university system and impose its will.
I've been thinking a lot about this. If they don't at least threaten to take the same approach as Trump (but in the opposite direction), institutions will keep moving to the right, shaping society.
What's to stop the next Democratic administration from extorting these schools right back? And as much as I hate this shit, they probably should. Otherwise, you're creating an incentive ratchet that only moves to the right.

It's like Trump making false accusations that Obama committed "sedition." He thinks it's fine when he does it. He just likes using big, scary words to throw at his enemies, and doesn't care if they're true.

That's how MAGA sees pedophilia: Only a crime if someone you already hate does it.

Most politicians from North Carolina are going to reference their faith and if that's something you -- someone who is not from North Carolina -- do not like, you are perfectly welcome to shut the fuck up.

If you’re outraged that a NC Dem would mention prayer and think it’s a bad move, I probably don’t need to hear additional political insights from you

This is huge news. There's not another Dem in NC with the name recognition and respect that Cooper has. He's the only one who could beat Lara Trump if she decides to run.

What if Democratic candidates used their enormous text messaging machine to mobilize, organize, inspire, explain, and build community instead of just asking for money all the time? Huge missed opportunity.

Given that NC has been ruled by a gerrymandered, authoritarian NC legislature since 2010, I'd say he was right.
