when anyone says they worked hard on AI output you gotta hear it in the same way as a boss who says they worked really hard on something by which they mean they just kept telling other people who know how to make the actual work to do it better and redo it because it's not what they meant to ask for

something I'm surprised gen AI discourse didn't hit yet is the attitude "I asked for it to be done, so I made it" has always been how rich people view using workers who have trained skills and do the technical side. they see themselves as creators for having an idea, we were just a means to that end

#ArtAdventCalendar 22: a tumbling-blocks geometric #RugHooking work-in-progress. Started in February 2020, IIRC.
A hand-hooked running-loop-stitch work in progress, playing with the tumbling-blocks pattern (where 3 diamond shapes are placed together to form a cube, and shading of the cube’s sides give an illusion of movement). At its centre where 6 diamond points meet, is a colour wheel of bright saturated primary and secondary colours, shaded lightest at its centre and darkest at the edges of the star-shaped wheel. Diamonds in the tertiary colours turn the star into a hexagon, and diamonds in the quaternary colours are being started around the edges. Each stitch is a loop of hand-dyed wool fabric, with some silk, paper, and yarn added for textural effects. There are also embroidered and felted embellishments and buttons added. The edges are unfinished, with lots of the linen foundation fabric still left unhooked. “Colour Is Its Own Reward”, adapted from a traditional quilting/tiling pattern and hooked by Deb Merriam, started in a workshop with Gail Becker.

I see there’s a post about microplastics going around with a photo of drinking straws, so here is my semi-regular reminder that the 3 biggest sources of microplastics are tires (45%), synthetic clothing particles (35%) and paint (~10%).

This is my wife's favorite photo of mine from 2025. She convinced me to include it in our photography club show and sale and it's one of the photos that sold.

I think this is a really important point. When folks say "no AI" they often don’t mean "I can conceive of no possible use for AI"—they mean "the use cases I’ve been shown do not begin to justify the harms"—that’s not something you respond to by offering another narrow use case
