I dunno, convert some of the endless paved space reserved for cars into green space that can absorb water, maybe?

Sorry, forget it. That could result in a car owner being inconvenienced, which would of course be far worse than the flooding of our cities and towns.
Is there anything we can do to alleviate flash floods in the West Midlands
Experts say housebuilding and concrete drives are making floods worse, but that there are things we can do.

RIP Tom Stoppard who did so much incredible work, not least writing every single line of dialogue in Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade.

Pretty much the same as I already do, but in a better, less feral society.

Probably enjoy the art being made, smile at the kids with more security in their lives, shop at the stores made more viable by there being more money in their customers’ pockets.
Honest question: If everyone got Universal Basic Income, no strings attached, what would YOU do with it?

Funny AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHHH as opposed to funny ha ha
It's funny to me how the political priority of Westminster is "economy above the dignity and well being of natives" but at the same time "removing the dignity and well being of non natives above the economy"

My inner Sir John Soane is wincing at Dickens’s treatment of architectural education in Martin Chuzzlewit. “Hi, welcome to architectural school. Here, draw me a grammar school while I go to London. Now bugger off.”

The Telegraph is worried that feeding themselves is a blue tit's personal responsibility and that feeding the creates dependency, removing the incentive for birds to work and improve themselves, and thus perpetuate the problem of hunger amongst blue tits

TFW you make a pumpkin pie and accidentally invent pumpkin spice treacle tart, and make up for it by decorating the pecan pie…

This morning was a classic railway 'real time' case study:
If it says "4 minutes late" you KNOW it's running ✅
If it says "On time" you have no idea if it'll even run ❌
Only drove to Bicester once I saw the 10:12 to Oxford was +4 late so knew it was actually running! 🤷‍♂️

THREAD.

3 years ago, with no warning, a brilliant orange farm cat wandered over from the draughty barn where he had been living, in rural Cornwall, and decided he wanted to live with us instead.

We decided to call him Jim.

This is the first photo I took of him, on that night: December 1st, 2022.

A charming story about Thanksgiving and clashing cultures (both US and U.K. and, more specifically, US Army versus British Army).
OK - pie discourse - best pie story:

In 2016, we were living in Andover, in the UK. My wife was assigned as an exchange officer at the Army Air Corps base at Middle Wallop (yes, really).*

The US Army has a tradition: senior leaders, in dress uniform, serve junior troops Thanksgiving dinner.

This is a fair point but for Britain I firmly blame Henry VIII for nationalising the monasteries then privatising them (giving them to his mates, like all privatisations).
We were never going to survive Reagan and Trump is a direct result of that awful presidency. But in all honesty this goes back to the Compromise of 1878 where we let the Confederate traitors back into government and prematurely ended Reconstruction. The Confederacy is stronger than ever now.
