Merry fucking Christmas

Have to say Christmas chocolates seem to have taken a turn for the worse this year. Things haven’t been good for a while but they’re even more noticeably waxy than before. Maybe I accidentally bought Terry’s Chocolate Orange candles?

Never failed to smile when this man came on screen. RIP
Just recently, he was very funny in THE RESIDENCE, one of my favorite shows of the year. Plus THE WIRE, obviously, plus a *lot* of trips to the Law & Order universe, and on and on. A fabulous, versatile presence.

What should be a joyful holiday activity, my family putting the miniature Christmas village together, is more contentious than a City of Vancouver public hearing on zoning changes. I am staying well out of the fray and watching Nigella Lawson make a Christmas pavlova.

Definitely one of my favourite paintings.
As it’s Christmas, I thought I’d share with you a painting by the Low Countries painter Pieter Brueghel the Elder (c1525-1569) who painted one of the most atmospheric artworks in 1565; The Hunters in the Snow. I’ve used software editing to bring the image back to how it might have originally looked.

Imagine if Hockey Canada, Canada Soccer, and Curling Canada do what Skate Canada just did in Alberta?

And Premier Smith citing the IOC...ha! They're right up there with FIFA in their ethical practice and governance.

Did Danielle Smith do any sports, outside mandatory gym class?

People aren't getting it.

Carney plans to spend $1.7 billion on recruiting researchers from the US or who would otherwise go to the US.

Yay, right?

The *entire annual budget* of NSERC is $1.3 billion. And he's cutting that.

I miss Granville Books.
I’m pretty sure that when I was in high school in the early 2000s I’d often go to a Barnes and Noble that was open until midnight a couple of nights a week, like Friday and Saturday?

But it sounds so crazy I don’t even trust my own memory of that now.
Wal-Mart is open until midnight for the holidays and there’s a bunch of high school kids here giddy that they can run around the store “so late.”

Heartbreaking. They have no idea what was taken from them.

I really like the contrast @kehyslop.bsky.social makes with how we treat these offences when it’s a teacher. We know who the teacher is and also if they’re going to continue to have authority over young people. Cops? Meh. Who knows? It’s kind of gross.
In late Nov. researcher @kwardvancouver.bsky.social pointed me to an OPCC investigation summary into now ex-VPD officer’s abusive relationship with a teenage girl. They met when he made a policing presentation at her high school & she expressed interest in being a cop. thetyee.ca/News/2025/12... 1/
