It’s Black History Month in the US and LGBTQ+ History Month in the UK. I’m a citizen of both, and I have a book that’s both Black and queer, like me.

If you're in the LA area I just found out its available on Hoopla and Libby. Support libraries and check it out if you like creepy southern stories about spiders 🕷

Black History Month did not begin as a celebration.

It began as a correction.

February 2026 marks 100 years of nationwide commemoration of Black history.

Black History Month still exists because the record still needs correcting.

i thought i'd celebrate Black History Month by sharing a book by a Black creator every day, starting with this picture book by @4nikkolas.bsky.social that just got a Sibert honor. i was immediately caught by the illustrations when our library copy came in last year, and the concept is so cool.

A reminder that the Black creatives you will suddenly remember exist during #BlackHistoryMonth are out there the other 11 months of the year, doing their work.

Let’s make support continuous, not conditional upon looking inclusive for 28 days.

As someone who has spent over 35 years trying to explain that violence is inherent to policing only to have most people be OK with this, I could be excused if I decided to just give up. But I'm not. I knew we would be where we are today. I still think that we do not have to live like this.

BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA. it's been a good ten years since my last reread and i think about it all the time. painting the room gold, and i don't believe it but i think it's beautiful, and god does not damn little girls to hell. also i was definitely gay for Leslie without knowing that was even a thing.
What is "your" Newbery book? The one you read when you were little (or not so little), and took into your soul?

Mine's The Perilous Gard.

Nasra Ahmed, a 23-year-old US citizen, was arrested and detained by ICE. She was held for TWO DAYS.

ICE agents handcuffed her, called her a racial slur, and she was knocked to the ground so hard she got a concussion.

This cannot continue happening. ICE needs to leave.

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.
