OpenAI’s new guidelines ask its chatbot to celebrate ‘innovation.' Not only is the move self-serving, Vauhini Vara writes, but it could help redefine our understanding of objectivity:
ChatGPT’s Self-Serving Optimism
OpenAI’s new guidelines ask its chatbot to celebrate ‘innovation,’ contradicting its stated goal of objectivity—and raising questions about what objectivity even means.

I’m really depressed by this Netflix thing, especially since HBO has had some terrific shows. How long before streaming content is too bland to watch?
Five corporations control 90% of the US media market.

Airlines merged from 12 major carriers in 1980 to 4 today.

Four giants control 80% of meat processing.

The evidence of corporate consolidation is everywhere.

It means more power for them and less freedom for you.
Netflix's $83 billion takeover of Warner Bros Discovery would mean more corporate consolidation.

Netflix, by far the #1 streamer, would take over HBO Max, the #3 streaming service.

This giant merger could violate antitrust law and hurt consumers.

Walmart and McDonald’s are among the top employers of workers who rely on food stamps.

McDonald's CEO raked in $18.2M last year — over 1,000x the company's median employee pay.

Walmart's CEO pocketed $27.4M — 930x the company's median employee pay.

See the problem?

I think the shortest version of why LLMs are an anti education technology is that education is fundamentally about making shared context to understand ourselves, each other, and the world

And by design LLMs destroy shared context

Vaccines DO NOT cause autism - there is extensive research showing this. Resurrecting old, discredited, fraudulent work is shameful.

Vaccine-preventable illnesses are serious - this is going to cause real harms.

This is dangerous & disappointing.

Unaffordable electricity is fast becoming a major source of insecurity in the U.S.

AI data centers are devouring power—and causing light bills to skyrocket—while private equity giants like Blackstone buy up utilities to extract maximum profit. This really needs to be a bigger story.
Eleven states and the District of Columbia have seen double digit increases in the cost of residential electricity over the last year.

In New Jersey, electricity costs are up over 20%.

In DC, that number is over 30%.

Non-industry compromised scientists keep saying these models don't become safe, no matter what, but people keep thinking just because the concept of guardrails is mentioned it must work. By definition, it doesn't. This is not something open to discussion, unless you're a paid shill.
"Powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o model by default...tests repeatedly showed that the AI toy dropped its guardrails the longer a conversation went on, until hitting rock bottom on incredibly disturbing topics."

FoloToy says it's suspended sales of its AI-powered teddy bear after researchers found it gave wildly inappropriate and dangerous answers.

UPS announced 48,000 layoffs. Its CEO made over $24M last year.

Intel announced 20,000 layoffs. Its new CEO's pay package is valued at nearly $69M.

This is what I mean when I say the system is rigged.

When CEOs & other suits make 23 million a year, it’s not capitalism, it’s this:

Does it change how we perceive any social tie?
We haven’t done enough empirical theorizing about what it means for a person’s psychology to have an online following. What does it do cognitively to the brain when everyday interactions become *expected* to be mediated and broadcast? Especially to weak ties.

A friend recently texted me the same thing. “Do you really not use ChatGPT?!” It was a sign of where we are culturally on this. People are compelled to use it but also starting to question the normalcy?
Recently met someone who was very surprised to hear I didn’t use ChatGPT or any LLM.

I said my job depended on doing distinctive work. That was my selling point. If I started to sound like ChatGPT and turn out what it did, then how on earth could I justify doing it? What would that make me?

It is definitely the transformative process of thinking across words, of finding the right way to capture a sensed feeling that keeps me writing. It’s the embodied experience that LLMs disembody.
I call it “joyful rigor” when I explain this effort to my students. I don’t believe in or rather, I’m not a “suffering poet.” I’m a writer who enjoys writing. The work works on me and I’m grateful for the opportunity to delve into the process at my own pace and to be changed by it.
That’s the other thing that baffles me about AI and creative writing, actually.

The work IS the joy for me. I don’t want to be able to snap my fingers and have a completed “product.” I want to be transformed by the process. I’m an author but I do this because I enjoy the rigor of being a writer.

I feel this far more than I want - seems like magic but is more like the Anthropology rock joke.
Can you imagine if the special effects in Star Wars sucked but everyone was “You should see it because one day the technology used WON’T suck”?

Oh, and making it destroyed the environment.
