A thread on the Hegseth sexual assault allegations.

Today Mediaite published redacted copies of reports from the Monterey Police investigation into on a sexual assault reported by an anonymous survivor. The report, linked below, contains graphic descriptions of sexual assault. I will quote some …
There is no scientific theory to explain conscious choice (aka free will) because there is no material definition of conscious choice sufficient to test an empirical hypothesis about conscious choice. The failure to create one suggests that it may not be empirically objective at all.

Trump requires a much more competent opposition party than this. Not only do Democrats suck, they aren’t even any good at it.

One time i got stopped on the sidewalk by city police in those lame dark blue camouflage uniforms. I said something like “dude, we can definitely see your big SUV with the flashing lights over there, you have zero chance of blending in in your camo jammies.”
Not, y’know, to his face or anything…
The fact that these clowns are wearing camouflage pretty much says everything you need to know about the seriousness with which they take their job.

This is cosplaying at best, brown shirting at worst.

Trump said something about stopping wildfires didn’t he?
NEW: Nine fires are burning across rural Yuma County, Colorado. Winds to 50-60mph. Farmers being asked to bring tractors and disks to cut fire lines. No formal evacuations. Appears very fluid. Emergency managers telling people to evacuate for nearest town if fire approaches.

Radlib “journalists” like Wilkins and the other opinion writers he cites are all weirdly deferential to Russian imperialism. The blatant hypocrisy (most apparent with disinformation agents like Assange & Snowden who have publicly receive d financial support from Russia) suggests hidden motives.

Wake up, honey.

New casus belli dropped.
Trump on Venezuela: "Getting land, oil rights, whatever we had -- they took it away because we had a president that maybe wasn't watching. But they're not gonna do that. We want it back. They took our oil rights. We had a lot of oil there. They threw our companies out. And we want it back."

$1,000 more a month for the same home. Crazy.

Americans don’t want another Iraq.

We don’t want our kids dying so defense contractors can get richer. We don’t want to waste trillions overseas while families are struggling here at home.

Democrats should be clear: no more regime change, no more endless war.
Chuck Schumer won't say if he opposes regime change in Venezuela.

JAKE TAPPER: Do you disagree with President Trump's ultimate goal of regime change in Venezuela?

CHUCK SCHUMER: President Trump throws out so many different things in so many different ways, you don't even know what the heck ...

This thread with the comments and questions is worth taking some time to read. Trump’s administration is moving into the area of symbolic but materially low consequences area of domestic policy as it gears up for war with Cuba and Venezuela.
The Trump admin says it aims to file 100-200 denaturalization cases per month, a huge increase. But these cases are hard to file and win, and require a lot of DOJ resources, and the DOJ is incredibly stretched thin already. So we’ll see; I have serious doubts about their ability to do this.
What this will mean, in practice, that if you are deemed an enemy of the administration, they will pore through your citizenship application paperwork looking for some reason to retroactively disqualify you.

I’ll also note that there are 25 million naturalized citizens, so even if the Trump admin succeeded at its wildest dreams, we’re talking 2,400 denaturalizations a year, or 0.01% of the total naturalized immigrant population.

So it’s more to spread fear and send a message than make a tangible dent.

He actually already heard a denaturalization case in 2017, Maslenjak v. US. It was a unanimous-in-outcome case that held you can’t be denatzed for an immaterial false statement. Gorsuch concurred, joined by Thomas, to say he thought the court was weighing in too soon on a doctrinal issue.
can't wait for the tortured legal reasoning in the 5-4 Gorsuch in 2028 making it much easier for the feds to bring and win these cases

Models are great. Simulations are awesome. Synthetic data is useful.

But all of them can also be awful and used to generate bad science. We need to know exactly why we're using any of them, what assumptions we're making when using them, and what those assumptions mean for our inferences.

I cannot readily imagine a relative advantage of sampling survey/experiment data from an LLM to sampling known models/distributions if we cannot meaningfully define a population LLMs sample or formalize the sampling scheme. Idk what we can learn abt a model/method without clarity abt what we put in.

The boat was headed for Suriname, not the U.S.
It wasn't carrying fentanyl.
The survivors didn't "radio for backup."

This strike was illegal, and Hegseth is trying to cover up what happened by refusing to release video.
