I'd read the shit out of a future book that did a good job of breaking down the history of Pax Americana and how its effects contributed to its own death
i do think the fundamental problem with the contemporary american electorate is that a critical mass of those voters do not believe in or accept trade offs
we live in an age where voters do not believe in trade offs, probably because we as a society are so wealthy that its broken our brains

Generally their understanding of the Chinese cultural revolution is that only landlords died when my grandmas understanding of the cultural revolution was that the math teacher that was slightly too mean died
I have long had zero patience with Americans who furiously post about how cool and fun a bloody leftist revolution would be, because that is the stupid shit you say when you don’t know very much about how those revolutions tend to go for people who aren’t rich and powerful

One thing I think people talking about the threat of authoritarian creep have gotten, if not exactly wrong, not quite right either is to frame discussion in terms of various European precedents.

Those are relevant to be sure, but we also have an American precedent - namely the South before 1965.
