My prevailing suspicion right now is that the majority of *all* AI compute demand, worldwide, is Microsoft, Amazon, and Google (at a stretch), with most of that going toward either OpenAI or Anthropic. I do not think robust demand exists outside these two companies. If I am right that is very bad.

The problem is that the actual economic significance of LLMs is very small - $40bn this year? - compared to the economic activity required to sustain it ($400bn+ capex/vc). Will every government fund every data center buildout? What about their capex? Or will the illusion break?

The assumption I assume now is that OpenAI and it's clients need to convince the government to prop it up before then...even then, I dunno if that'd save them from being torn apart by the markets when the wind changes.

ECONOMY• MARKETS When Al's 'inevitable slowdown' comes it could tank S&P 500's valuation multiple by up to 20%, Goldman Sachs says Valuations are high, but they are actually lower than they were in the dotcom boom of 2000, Goldman says. There is one danger looming, the bank notes, and that is the "inevitable slowdown" in capital expenditures by the "hyperscaler" Al companies, (Amazon, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle). Under what Goldman calls "an extreme scenario in which the hyperscalers cut capex back to 2022 levels," the "lost" revenues to Al companies would represent a 30% cut to Goldman's estimate of $1 trillion in total sales growth across the S&P 500 companies next year. In turn, "a reversion of long-term growth estimates back to early 2023 levels would imply 15%-20% downside to the current valuation multiple of the S&P 500." The question then becomes, when does the slowdown in AI spending happen? "Analysts currently assume a sharp deceleration in 4Q 2025 and 2026," Goldman says. But expect that date to slip: Hyperscaler companies keep revising their capex guidance upward. The note also suggests that as well as a deceleration (after all, spending will have to plateau at some point) investors are going to want to see more meaningful results as time goes on. With regard to so-called Phase 3 companies, for example, those which will benefit from the ripple effect of the technology, the analysts write: "We expect the Al trade will eventually broaden out to some Phase 3 companies, but investors will likely require evidence of a tangible near-term impact on earnings ... Our equity analysts acknowledge that there has been limited value creation in enterprise software applications thus far."

Discussion It's behavior and results can randomly change due to some OpenAl tweaking that's opaque. On some days it can't even keep track of a fresh chat, it can't do calculations, it can't sort through a chat to extract relevant information, and when it's suppose to refer to source material in a PDF, it doesn't. All because OpenAl trained it for fluency and basically to simulate whatever it can for user satisfaction. I can use it for general chats, philosophical stuff, therapy, but nothing serious. I'm pro Al, but I approach it with skepticism knowing it's undependable (as I do with anything I read). And prompts can be interpreted/executed differently across users' own interaction with their Als so it's not truly scalable. How does the business world / leaders expect staff to adopt Al if it's not consistently dependable? It doesn't even calculate like a calculator. If the internet start claiming 2+2=5, that's what it'll answer with. I'd use it for hobbies and pet projects but I can't imagine using it for anything "mission critical".
