From what I could tell on my commute the roads were pretty good in Toronto despite the heavy snow. The sidewalks and bus stops I needed, however, were not clear. Getting on and off the bus was a dicey proposition. Glad I went early and drivers made space for us on the road.

This was just me making this comparison yesterday, but today the Korean news is calling Minnesota "America's Gwangju" and have human rights lawyers explaining how America is now living through the dictatorship Korea once had.
The Chun regime that my wife fought against in the 80s did the exact same thing. They needed a "crisis" that "only they could solve" to hoard more ill-gotten power, so they chose one city (Gwangju), declared its inhabitants enemies, sent trucks full of soldiers to violently attack and kill them.

This reflects a stunning (but unsurprising) ignorance. Prime Ministers and Presidents don’t just differ by historical fluke or semantics. They arise from different systems: Presidents are directly elected executives, PMs sit in the legislature. Basic civics, fundamental constitutional issues.
At this meeting, Dennis Modry claimed that Premier Danielle Smith said she prefers the title 'Prime Minister' over 'President,' in a discussion about her possible leadership in an independent Alberta. 1/5

They found a worm in this guy’s brain, he eats roadkill on the regular, abused opiates for years (and allegedly steroids &c. now), but he wants you to believe it was the flu shot that messed him up.

This propaganda not only abuses its subject, but also exposes the creator’s sadism. To them, the actual image — and reality itself — is spoiled if the victim isn’t acutely suffering or retains too much dignity.
This is the first example I’ve seen of an American government using AI to meaningfully misrepresent actual events with the intent to deceive the public. We are at Stalinesque levels of propaganda.

He could not be more effective at undermining solidarity among NATO partners if he had been vat-grown in a laboratory specifically for that purpose.
Trump on NATO: "I've always said, will they be there if we ever needed them? That's really the ultimate test. I'm not sure of that. We've never needed them. They'll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan and this or that. And they did. They stayed a little back, off the front lines."

Yeah well he also told people to vacation in Michigan this summer (where has he been vacationing lately, eh?) so maybe I’ll give his advice a bit of scrutiny.

Here’s the really bad part: over time, this dynamic breeds bigger and bigger crises.

Markets keep updating their beliefs about TACO, so it takes ever more extreme actions to convince them he might not TACO.

Buckle up.

I love my profession deeply, but some of them are not covering themselves in glory these days. If a mob boss draws a sharp blade languidly across your palm and says it would be a real shame for you to lose your pinky, your headline isn't "Godfather rules out hacking off finger to settle debt."
Right on cue, here are the push alerts from the 3 major newspapers lmao

After weeks out of service (or, I guess, somehow repeatedly being pulled?) the fire alarm in this GO station is now fixed and protected. This thing’s saga makes me wonder how much other safety infrastructure is waiting to be fixed.

I was on a city bus where the driver missed a single left turn and everyone immediately went wild shouting at them for it so I can hardly imagine the level of tension on this trip. I hope the explanation isn’t something scary for the driver.

Exactly this. He said not to believe that Norway controls the award because it’s from Norway. In other words, if it was for
HIS country he would have corrupted the prize. He also said he deserved *eight* Nobel peace prizes: one for every war he claims to have ended.
Bizarre as it seems, Trump may genuinely be unable to grasp that the Nobel Committee is independent - because the very idea of an institution remaining outside political control is alien to him.
