This is an interesting point I had not yet considered.
Anyways a note that I will make on this fucking nightmare of a weekend is that authoritarian regimes actually require greater consent of the governed than democracies do.

Something I don’t think polling fully captures is the intensity of unpopularity. “Strongly disapprove” covers a wide range of attitudes. There’s “this sucks” strongly disapprove and there’s “it is now my life mission to destroy all that you stand for at all costs” strongly disapprove.

Generally speaking I think the stance of "no deals at all, burn it all down" is not unreasonable at this moment. But it also misses a lot of nuance of what happens during a shutdown.
