For many years, @americanstudier.bsky.social has worked tirelessly to make scholarship more accessible to a broader audience and help interject academic observations into our political discourse.

He is now continuing that crucial mission away from Substack - and he deserves your support:
In these fraught times, we need spaces & communities of our own, that we can make what we want & use to support each other & our work. &, yes, to avoid Nazis as much as possible. That's why we left Substack, & why @gvaughnjoy.bsky.social worked so hard on our new website. So+🗃️

these Senators like to pretend they're stupid, but they're really just openly corrupt

I'd guarantee that all eight of the folders were being pressured by corporations upset about the suspension of some gravy train or another, and it didn't go any deeper than that

Trump says he didn't really need to demolish the East Wing to build his fancy ballroom, but he just didn't like it and wanted it gone.

He also claimed he's built many many ballrooms and "This will be one of the greatest ballrooms in the world.”

I keep thinking, stuff like this doesn’t come down without a mandate from fairly high up, ultimately at least sanctioned by the top, to remove everything that positively mentions Black people. It’s not like the memorial to Black soldiers in the Netherlands was on anyone’s radar otherwise.
1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️

It’s so cool how we’re only “playing god” when it comes to allowing people to have kids via medicine or when folks want to affirm their gender and never when we decide who gets to be detained without a warrant, die in prison, who gets to have medical care, and which kids get to eat today

I'm also drawing fruit/veg for people who donate $50 to @wingsndnsilver.bsky.social for SNAP replacement grocery gift cards; I'll do up to 20 of those this weekend. See thread for details and quotes of this post for availability.

I reckon the most interesting subset of discourse here is when presumed [good] factors are actually either actually bad, or there to downplay or dismiss the bad even if the amount of good is way smaller than the bad.

A short thread to explain: on "training for electrification" + "demand response"
I would love it if public discourse on data centers could be just a skosh more sophisticated than "data centers good vs. data centers bad."

There is a tendency for popular science to fall back on "great man" theories for science (something Nobel prizes tend to reinforce), but if you read this article, you'll see that a lot of people contribute to the discoveries that get credited to just a few individuals.

The ChatGPT suicide hotline is a hotline that talks you into committing suicide. Doesn't seem like a service that should be legal.
Panera’s moderately caffeinated lemonade was loosely associated with 2 deaths before it was taken off market.

This article alone has 4 examples of ChatGPT encouraging young people to commit suicide, and OpenAI’s own public stats estimate over a million users discuss suicide with ChatGPT each week.
I fully believe in the corporate death penalty and believe we would be a better world if OpenAI lost its corporate charter and was forcibly dissolved.
