Among the bills vetoed by Gov Hochul in the close of the year,

the "Keep police radio public act," which would have ensured that police dispatch radio remained audible to the press.

Encrypted radio communications make it much harder for the press to keep law enforcement accountable.

Sensitive tactical communications have long been encrypted. But recently, NYPD has been encrypting much of its precinct-level dispatch communications as well.

The act, which passed this summer, gives press access to frequencies that had long been publicly accessible.

Every day there's likely at least one story in the paper that got its start as a snippet that a reporter heard over the radio scanner.

Scanner traffic is crucial for reporting on natural disasters, fires, train derailments, shootings, and much more.

The Keep Police Radio Public Act is on Gov. Hochul's desk -- and it's important it becomes law.

Open access to police radio dispatch channels (as well as other public two-way radio chatter) is an important check on the PR operations run by many of the agencies we cover.

May the history of the Daily News, when it is written, reflect that upon unanimous ratification of the first contract in more than three decades, the next words uttered in the Zoom call were those of street reporter Kerry Burke: “Okay, I got a homicide. I gotta go.”

This was a hard-fought contract, and for the first time in recent history, we now have an actual system for annual raises at the Daily News.

A monumental win with this ratification vote.

(And Kerry is the best street reporter around, brotha.)

Shame on Condé Nast management. If you can't take questions, don't be in the business of hiring reporters.
Breaking News: Late last night Conde Nast illegally fired 4 union organizers who asked company execs to explain the downsizing of Teen Vogue and continued layoffs. We’ve filed a grievance.

This is the first CBA the for the paper's newsroom in 34 years. This is by all measures a historic accomplishment.

When we formed this union five years ago, we aimed to safeguard against the wrath of Alden, a hedge fund notorious for scrapping newspapers for parts.

We've reached the end of a three-year battle... and come out the other side with health care for part timers, raises, and much more. This would never have happened without the dedicated support of so many people at the Daily News, former Daily Newers, and many others. 🖖🏻

This is the first contract for Daily News employees in more than three decades.

We want to thank everyone for their support in this struggle.

It can sound trite, but it's true:

When we fight, we win. Long live the Daily News.

Highlights include: a $60k salary floor that climbs to $63k in May; 6% raises over six months; new benefits like healthcare for our part-timers; preservation of a key time-off benefit for our sportswriters.

"That fact seemed unfathomable to me given the way The News always embodied the rowdiest, the best and the most profanely purposeful newsroom I had ever seen, and (with permission for a bit of New York grandiosity here) the world had ever known." NYDN vet Charles Sennott on a News without a newsroom.
