We stand in solidarity with our @condeunion.bsky.social siblings at @teenvogue.com who were unceremoniously laid off last week.

Layoffs are not a solution to unbalanced budgets, especially when those laid off come from marginalized backgrounds typically not represented at major media orgs.

Even when a company is based in a state with strong labor laws, those protections often don’t extend to remote #freelancers. This loophole lets companies dodge accountability entirely.

We’re fighting to close it through legislation. Donate to the legal fund today: www.zeffy.com/en-US/donati...

"Guevara had not given up hope of one day returning to the US, where he said he had a fully paid house and was striving for legal permanent residency at the time of his deportation."

Being a member of the media is not a crime. Being an immigrant is not a crime.

Speaking of freelancers, looking out for fellow freelance creatives is really important to me. We worked with @nwu.org and @fspnwu.bsky.social to develop contributor guidelines to protect freelancers, be transparent about our relationships, and set fair pay standards.

The Flytrap and National Writers Union have agreed upon freelancer policies for media workers contributing to The Flytrap Media.

We signed on because as a labor union representing independent media workers, we both feel and agree that indie journalists are "particularly susceptible to retaliation, intimidation, & violence, & attacks on them should be treated w/ the same seriousness as attacks on better known journalists."
Law enforcement needs to rein in ICE's anti-press abuses and investigate ICE attacks on independent journalists in Chicagoland.

A coalition of Chicago and national press freedom orgs explained why in a letter to the Broadview Police Department and Illinois State Police today.
Independent journalists must be protected from ICE attacks
