When billionaires own the news, truth takes a back seat to profit and power. That’s dangerous for all of us.

As has been proven time and again across the globe, the targeting of journalists never ends with the most vulnerable. Instead, the targeting of marginalized journalists normalizes and facilitates attacks on the free press at large. Read our full statement at nwu.org/lemon-and-fort

I want to make a point here: The two journalists they went after were independent, so the pain of having to deal with the legal system is going to be felt more acutely, even if you’re Don Lemon.

If they arrested CNN employee Don Lemon, this story would play out very differently.
the practical effect of arresting lemon et al is to spark widespread condemnation, especially since these arrests will certainly be thrown out. this doesn't mean the action isn't a dangerous escalation, it does mean the white house doesn't know what to do but spam its only attack

As a labor union representing independent media workers, we feel it's important to name that both Lemon and Fort are independent journalists, and that the targeting of independent journalists should be treated with the same gravity as the targeting of those with institutional backing.
Don Lemon was not the only journalist arrested -- Georgia Fort was as well. Don Lemon has the resources to come out of this just fine. Georgia Fort may not. Let's make sure the focus is on both of them.
"As a member of the press, I filmed the church protest a few weeks ago and now I'm being arrested for that," Indipendent journalist Georgia Fort said. "It's hard to understand how we have a Constitution, Constitutional rights, when we can just be arrested for being a member of the press."

Journalist Seth Harp's reporting on Maduro's abduction is protected by the First Amendment and Congress has no business grilling him about his sources.
