Since ChatGPT came out in late 2022, over *half a million* tech workers have been laid off. That fact, and their voices, aren't really shaping the conversation about AI, and what "AI" really means in culture. So I started to get into it: www.anildash.com/2026/01/06/5...

Story time.

In Vegas, you can rent a supercar for a day. Not for on a track, just to drive around. So once, I rented a Ferrari and spent the day driving. Red Rock Canyon, Hoover Dam, all the places you might want to go from Vegas, just really /really/ enjoying the drive, you know?

Anyway...

I am celebrating NYE with a nice controversial post:

Rupa Marya v. Warner/Chappell was a pyrrhic victory.

Great for copyright, terrible for daily life. Happy Birthday is an awful mood-killer of a song and we were all better off when public spaces had to replace it with something better.

Bitch, Asheville is a blue college town and the county has gone blue for decades. I am so sick of this “if I pretend disasters only happen to red areas, it means I’m safe because I’m properly on the left!” No. You’re not safe. That’s why we save everybody.

Merry Christmas to friends who celebrate, and even if you don’t, I hope you have a great one. Let’s make the new year better for all of us.

Classic reply.

We spoke to Flock safety, the manufacturer of these cameras, about privacy concerns.

"How is that being addressed?" ABC7 News reporter Luz Pena asked.

"If you're not involved in a crime, you shouldn't be concerned about privacy," said Lily Ho, Public Affairs for Flock Safety.

Seriously I hate this year. Greg Biffle was awesome. God damn it.
NASCAR's Greg Biffle flew countless flights in his helicopter in the days after Hurricane Helene to bring much-needed relief and rescue to people stranded in the mountains. His efforts were truly heroic. Very sad to hear that he and his family have been killed in a plane crash in Statesville today.

Tomorrow is the anniversary of my little brother's death.

There are few things more devastating to a family than having to bury a child (of any gender).

This weekend has done a horrific job of reminding me that the number is not zero.

My thoughts are with the Reiners, Australia, and Brown U.
