AI is absolutely, positively ruining everything. EVERYTHING.

AI is why the kids can't read. AI is why the kids can't think. AI is why your uncle's brain is cooked by right-wing nonsense. AI is why you can't just buy a damn grocery without a million headaches in between.
NEW: Springer Nature — the prestigious publisher of scientific journals like Nature and the 1845-founded magazine Scientific American — is imploring published journal authors to buy $49 AI-generated "Media Kits" that summarize their own work.

Oh joy. The "piracy isn't stealing because we're just copying a file" people have found my Mastodon account, along with the "if you really only made 21 cents per day this year nobody would be bothering to pirate your book anyway" people. 😑

Furnace just crapped out AGAIN. Heat restored by flipping the main switch again, but this is not normal. Another call in to the emergency line. I don't even want to think about how much this is going to cost to get diagnosed and fixed during a major holiday. 😭
Aaand it's 16.8C on the main level and 14.5 upstairs. I *just* replaced this damned furnace last year. 😭

And also, my Bell service also seems to be fritzing out and dropping calls again. Just spent an entire afternoon -- literally HOURS -- with their tech support a couple of weeks ago about this.

Seeds available for trade, larger amounts with sunchoke tubers within Canada.
USA, Europe, and possibly other countries I can send smaller amounts, and without larger seeds like corn, peas, and morning glorys

I can also do just book and art swaps

Christmas Day and I am up before the kids. (No surprise, they are older, so like to sleep in when they can, and I am old and have insomnia.) So, I am thinking tea and maybe finishing my library book. 😊

Some of you have forgotten that only three years ago you were perfectly capable of writing a text, writing an email, telling a bedtime story to a child, and it should worry you that powerful companies have convinced us we can’t do things we’ve been doing since the dawn of time.

No. 1

If you listen to my cat, she is clearly *dying* from lack of attention. Not having to work would give me more time to lavish attention upon her.

Agreed. It's heartbreaking when I see teachers telling kids to "just use AI for the art part" because it can do it "better" or "faster". It can't. Please don't do this to kids. You have no idea whose artistic spirit you're crushing. Same with writing. Help them figure out how to do it THEMSELVES.
I'm a comics creator. Every time I lead a workshop with kids, I see their absolute joy in drawing with their OWN HANDS. If you deny kids that joy by forcing them to type prompts into a computer, you're failing as an educator.

Shame on you for this.

This is my concern with the direction OCDSB has chosen with their AI policy, which literally refers to AI as "a thinking partner" for high school students.
You are painting a vision of a future in which teachers create lessons with "A.i.," students complete them with "A.i.," and teachers grade them with "A.i."

No learning takes place under this system.

The only benefactors of this system are the corporations being paid for the "A.i." products.
