Chapter six! In which Childe is Harbinger-ing for once, Zhongli continues to be Zhongli about it, and Lyney makes a terrible, terrible miscalculation.

AO3 header of the fic in question “Tanya,” Childe said, and didn’t have to summon his body double, for once. “Here,” she said, kneeling as she appeared a few feet away from them. “Get me Yelena and her research nerds,” Childe said, frowning. “The Abyss Order was here and I want to know what they were doing.” To the rest of his men, he added, in a louder voice. “Processing continues as planned, this has nothing to do with you.” And then he sighed. “Xiao.” “You do not command me,” the Yaksha said, staring at him with a frown, even though Childe could have sworn that was a joke. “Perish the thought, my esteemed Conqueror of Demons,” Childe said, grinning wryly. “But if you’re of a mind to take suggestions from a… concerned party?” Xiao squinted at him, and then looked at Zhongli, who offered merely a small shrug as guidance. “Speak.” Childe resisted the urge, not for the first time, to ruffle his hair. “You might want to take the time to inspect the sites that aren’t quite ripe for harvest yet?” Childe shrugged. “The Abyss Order is up to something, and I don’t like it.” “Your likes and dislikes are none of my concern,” Xiao responded crisply, and then bowed ever so slightly to Zhongli, before he vanished in another puff of smoke. “It’s remarkable how much he’s warmed up to you,” Zhongli said, amused. “Bossom buddies, him and I,” Childe replied with a smirk that faded after a moment. “We’re going to have to talk about this, aren’t we?” Zhongli offered a sympathetic smile. “I believe you will even have to write a report.” Childe sighed. “Joy.”

Moon Carver will have my head for that.” “Cease,” Zhongli laughed, shaking his head. “I am merely… reminiscing.” “Uh huh,” Childe said, tugging him into his arms with ease. “I had forgotten the… pleasure, I suppose, of knowing you do not march into battle alone.” Childe soaked in the expression on Zhongli’s face and tightened his hold on him, burying his face into his neck. “Never again, remember?” Childe grinned. “You don’t get to march anywhere alone anymore.” Zhongli made a noise in the back of his throat for a moment, and then added, like an utter shitheel: “Mr. Childe, that sounds almost like a vow.” Childe shoved him off with a splutter. “Fuck you,” he said, snarling, “I’m getting dinner with someone who won’t make me want to strangle them in their sleep.” Zhongli laughed at him and caught a wrist before he could storm out the tent. “Never again, didn’t you say?” Childe whirled around, indignant. “You—” Zhongli arched his eyebrows at him, expression utterly benign. …what followed was not, in fact, the worst thing he’d ever done in a command tent, but all the better if Ekaterina never heard about it.
