WIP Wednesday! Lyney does not deserve Spite. No one deserves Spite (except Remembrance), but Lyney above all does not deserve this shit.
“Who goes the… ah?” So much for a tactical retreat, Childe supposed, closing his eye to compose himself before leaning back to see who’d seen him and lost his nerve. It turned out to be one of the Fourth’s kids, Lyney, bow half-drawn and expression badly schooled into a blank mask. He wasn’t a bad kid, Childe reckoned, all things considered, but he struck him as impossibly soft for someone who had the Knave’s approval. Then again, Lyney was of the House, and Childe wasn’t, which was perhaps why he’d not gotten far while in her service. Half-drawn, but he was still pointing an arrow at him, shoulders loose and ready to re-aim at any moment. It took Childe a moment to realize Lyney was in the throes of animal fear and trying his damnest not to show it. It was rather quaint, really. Endearing, even. “Cat got your tongue, Lyney?” Childe asked, eyebrow arched as he let his hands slide into the pockets of his pants. Lyney startled minutely, grip shifting before he stood up straight and plastered a pleasant smile all over his face. “Sir,” he said. And paused. “We were told you were dead.” Childe smiled wryly. “Were you?” He snickered, somewhat malevolently, and hid it behind a half-curled hand. “It’s okay.” He shook his head. “I think they’ve been declaring me dead once a year since I enlisted. It happens.” Lyney gave him a look that clearly telegraphed that no, actually, it very much didn’t happen, but then he realized he was doing that, and the look was replaced by a quick flash of horror before he was back to his bland charm mask.

Childe popped into existence northeast of the Court, boots landing into the soft, yellow sand on the shore. The sun sat lazily halfway across the sky, noon dragging itself slowly into afternoon. He would have arrived earlier, but he’d spent a few hours resting his head on Zhongli’s lap and he refused to regret it. For one, the fortifying power of the erstwhile Lord of Geo was probably going to be a requirement to get through the mess he’d accidentally waded through in Fontaine. For another, he really, really didn’t want to do any of the things he knew he needed to do. There quite a few things stewing in his brain, not the least of them the perpetual itch behind the eyepatch. Or the strange euphoria bubbling under his skin, threatening at any moment to burst through the facsimile of a human shell to expose… whatever the hell he was, now. It felt like having Zhongli’s heart inside him again, except distinctly unforeign in its intrusion. All at once he felt invigorated, veins plump with life and adrenaline, and also bone-deeply tired, exhausted to the marrow, like every ounce of his soul had been pulped and forced through a thin mesh, and any sudden movement would result in a catastrophic collapse that would require Zhongli to spend a few centuries piecing him back together. (Zhongli would, Childe knew with visceral, delirious certainty, always put him back together, no matter what.) He took a breath, and then another. There was a salty tang to Fontanian air, too fine to rasp against his throat but always present, like an aftertaste in the back of his mouth. It wasn’t necessarily unpleasant, it was just… different. The Harbor must have had that tang as well, when he first arrived, but the Harbor was home, and nothing about it chafed now, not even politics or the weather or the fact Ningguang still probably wanted his head mounted on a fancy frame inside her goddamn Jade Chamber. Zhongli expected this – brief, irresponsible, irrational, nonsensical – skirmish to end similarly to the last one, when he’d first gauged Childe’s strength. It did not. It extended far beyond that first clash, something feral and brutal and hungering in the way Childe moved, that forced Zhongli to match his rhythm, to fall in step. Like a dance, only the music was the frantic beating of a too human heart struggling under the pressure of too much power all at once. It was hypnotic and distracting and deeply, profoundly, unspeakably fun. So much fun he might have forgotten it was a human he was dancing with. Round and round they went, no shield, no spear at his hand, only the glimmer of pure, unblemished Geo at his fingertips, hardening the surface of his gloves such that they could easily deflect and redirect the earnest swipes trying to take his head. He hadn’t exerted himself at all in so long, hadn’t felt himself anchored to his true nature, without the filter of the Gnosis in the way, that even within the constrains of his human shape, he felt a shot of unadulterated joy as he found himself pressing back harder and harder against Childe’s attempts. Higher and higher, chasing after that note of feral, unbridled brutality, right into its obvious, unsurprising end. Childe gasped, the ghost of a laugh trapped in the sound, as his blood ran free, but it was the sound – strained and cut short – that brought Zhongli back to his senses long enough to realize what he’d done. “Shit,” he said, conjuring another gasp of laughter out of Childe, whose shoulders trembled with fearless mirth as his transformation faded away. Given that Zhongli had an arm right through him, his life was not going to linger much either. Shit, Zhongli thought, and did the one thing he could think of, before he remembered Morax was dead and therefore not around to be able to do what needed doing. Shit.

But the Qixing refuse to declare war upon Snezhnaya, despite the fact every able soul in Liyue would take up arms to avenge their Lord. So the rumor is passed around, along with tidbits of what did happen in the meantime: The Harbinger returned to take his seat at the head of the Northland Bank without comment, and paid fees and extra taxes without complaints. The captured Fatui were returned to Northland Bank, and then… nothing much else happened. Round and round goes the rumor, words whispered in hushed tones as the Harbinger walks around the Harbor, soon enough falling into a routine of accompanying the Wangsheng Consultant and the Wangsheng Director up their morning climb to Mt. Tianheng. Rumors are malleable things, changing shape every time they’re retold. Maybe the Harbinger is the cause of all the trouble that has besieged Liyue recently, but perhaps not the way one might initially think: what if, whisper the rich, drunken tongues aboard the Pearl, what if the Harbinger was trying to prove Rex Lapis wasn’t dead? What if he’d been preparing to meet him – tracking down history and rituals and circling Jueyun Karst for months before the tragedy struck – and when his hopes were dashed by the untimely departure of their Lord, he refused to believe it? The funniest part about the world ending was that it didn’t. Childe walked right up to his death, sucker-punched the bastard in the face and then proceeded to do that, over and over again, until reality gave up. Which sounds a lot more impressive than what actually happened: Childe died, and then didn’t, and then, inspired by the success of stubborn repetition, proceeded to do that approximately long enough that reality broke so hard it circled back to being normal. Minus an eye and having contracted a stubborn case of minor divinity, Childe went home, fundamentally still the same in all the ways that actually mattered, exemplified primarily by the fact the bit of sentient goddamn granite that he’d seduced into a semblance of normality did not do any of the obvious things one would do when one’s fiancé comes back wrong from certain death. It was offensive, really, how literally nothing changed.
