Used to be a European politics blogger. Occasionally considering a revival. Still looking for that Twitter alternative. Also on Mastodon, Threads, etc and rarely doing much there either.
I've utterly missed the latest BBC scandal - I can only assume that the director general and CEO who've been forced to resign must have spent decades as best mates with a notorious paedophile and sex trafficker, been convicted of sexual assault (among other felonies), and incited an insurrection.

Adding to the chorus of people (in my case white British) who have/had multiple "aunts" and "uncles" who aren't blood relatives.
How is this a scandal when *Trump* exists, FF?

In the final days of New York City’s mayoral race, Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani has faced pushback over a story he told about his aunt being afraid to wear her hijab while riding the subway after the September 11, 2001, attacks. https://cnn.it/432IAcr

Not quite sure why the media is presenting the Caerphilly result as a disaster for Labour, rather than as a perfect execution of its electoral strategy.
That strategy for *months* now has been to tell everybody who might otherwise be inclined to vote for them to fuck off.
And off they have fucked.

I hate literally everyone involved in this horrific, inhuman, ill-considered policy. This thread somehow managed to make me even angrier at the Tories - no means feat after the last decade and a half of their vandalism.
This Bill had 8 sponsors: Chris Philp (Shadow Home Secretary), Matt Vickers (shadow home affairs team) as well as Katie Lam (opposition assistant whip) and 5 backbenchers, class of 2024

A policy *supported by a smaller % of the population* than it would seek to deport!
Stephen Bush on the extraordinary draft legislation which Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp, Matt Vickers, Katie Lam and backbench colleagues have proposed in parliament
It is a proposal that would seek to deport around 5% of the resident population, including over a quarter of a million with ILR

Because seriously, fuck this and fuck the Tories. My wife's been paying into the UK state pension the entire time she's been allowed to work in this country. Then they want to kick her out when she finally tries to claim it, leaving her with no ability to claim a pension in *any* country?
Via @sundersays.bsky.social the Conservatives' draft legislation - absolutely clear that it applies to (and is intended to apply to) legal permanent residents claiming state pension (on the basis of their contributions) or child benefit for British kids.

To take my mind off the resurgence of mainstream political parties scapegoating foreigners rather than admit that *they* fucked us all over, I'm practicing my French via the excellent Atlas de Paris, by Danielle Chadych and Dominique Leborgne, found in a charity shop for £4 and worth ten times that.

Ditto.
(if anyone would like to maybe start some sort of campaigning or pressure group of and on behalf of immigrants with ILR and settled status in Britain then I would be interested in helping, or indeed trying to get it off the ground myself, email in bio, etc)

I mean, is it any wonder I spend almost every day angry despairing for the future?

NB: there are no exemptions for having a British spouse, or British citizen children, in the legislation as drafted

I cannot express enough how much I hate literally everyone who holds opinions like or even slightly adjacent to these.
Tory policy is to revoke permanent residence (ILR) for everybody who does not earn £38k - deporting most nurses who have ILR
This is put in the video as "who is unlikely to contribute more than they cost"
NB: video does not say EU settled status is exempt
No govt since Idi Amin has done this

Just a ridiculous joke of a country proclaiming it's "going for growth" and spending every waking moment instead focussed on vindictive cruelty to migrants.

oh that Labour quote can fuck right off

If Labour cannot denounce mass deportation of permanent residents, Idi Amin style, what is the point of them?

The Nobel Peace Prize 2025 has been awarded to Venezuelan democracy activist María Corina Machado.
The Nobel Committee recognised her “struggle to achieve a just & peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
In other words, exactly the opposite of what Trump is doing to the United States.

One might hope that a "nation" of Romano-Celtic-Anglo-Saxon-Jute-Pictish-Viking-Normans that's apparently so proud of its history that we forget the time we were successfully invaded by the Dutch and taken over by Germans should have some understanding that cultural integration happens over time...
I know statistics are poorly understood and are misused. But facts matter
Between the 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021 Census *every* ethnic group in the UK has become *less* geographically segregated and *all* groups, majority and minorities, are more likely to interact with people not like them

I remember being told that this whole fake Brexit referendum is just a strategic move to ensure that the ultra-right wing of Tories and Farage will disappear from the mainstream of shaping British politics for a generation, if not two. Some of the people who told me that still have six-digit jobs.

I've been reading Dominic Sandbrook's State of Emergency, on the UK in 1970-74. Ignoring his reactionary framing, it's kinda terrifying how familiar everything sounds - economic slumps, rising frustration and racism, useless government, detached PM...
