15 years ago today I arrived on Downing Street in a cage.
I've seen off Cameron, May, Johnson, Truss and Sunak and I'm still going strong.
Only two Prime Ministers have ever done longer stints here: William Pitt the Younger and Sir Robert Walpole.
Bill and Bob - I'm coming for you...

Larry the cat celebrates 15 years as the British government’s official rodent-catcher and unofficial first feline, a reassuring presence who has served under six prime ministers. Sometimes it seems like they have served under him.

Franzi Schimmer captured this Grizzly bear in Brooks Falls, Alaska just floating along, tippy-tapping down the river, browsing the salmon.

Prior to hibernation, up to 40% of a bear's body mass is fat, which is less dense than water (~0.9 g/cm^2), so the murder-monster is also a floaty-boaty.

Release the entire Epstein Files. Protect the victims’ identity. Name the names of perpetrators involved and prosecute every last damn one of them. That includes their enablers. This is the only way justice will do justice to the many victims of Epstein and his monstrous behaviour. Clear out the 💩
Wow! This is some top-notch investigative journalism. The report claims the 3 million Epstein files released are only 2% of the total.

The massive scale of what’s still missing is hard to comprehend.

Hey I'm back! As some of you know, I experienced some scary harassment here last month when a user threatened me and the sanctuary I work for and I was shocked when they received only a 3-day suspension for that. I have now been assured that the offending account is permanently suspended, and

I saw a live birthed harbor seal pup for the first time in my life today. I thought it would be horrifying because I have a weak stomach, but it turned to UNGODLY CUTE very fast!

Using this thread for some moments in the minutes after. All shot on my z8, edited on phone for now. 🦭 🦑

If you’re in a position to go one step further and support your indie bookshop and local independent electronics shop, please do. In our case our favourite truly independent bookshop is 20 miles away. Upside: we combine it by having a cuppa and treat whilst there, thus supporting another business.
Just ordered a book from my local Waterstones. Click and collect so I’ll get it on way home tonight. As cheap as Amazon. Also bought an instant camera earlier this week from Argos, cheaper than on Amazon. It’s proving very easy not to use the evil billionaire’s website. More of you should try it.

There are so many fucked up things with the current administration that it's hard to focus on one but this recent move is basically a death sentence for the planet. I've been involved with more boots on the ground actions over the years than I can count and this really bums me out.

The agency announced it is repealing its 2009 conclusion that greenhouse gases warm the Earth and endanger human health and well-being.

Regarding that last repost. Have visions of Noah’s Ark floating down the middle of York with a couple llamas, seagulls, Swaledale sheep, a couple blokes dressed up as Vikings ready to do a reenactment to entertain everyone on board. Meanwhile, someone’s upset the highland cows with a roast dinner.

Just watched ‘Becoming Victoria Wood.’ A beautiful a heartfelt tribute to a genuine comedy genius. Haven’t forgotten how devastated I felt on the day we heard of her passing. Hope she realised what an inspiration she was to so many of us, how much we loved both her writing and performances.

Healthy reminder: it’s entirely possible to make original films. Everything doesn’t have to be a remake. Arguably you cannot better *some* original films. There are plenty of screenwriters out there writing cracking original material.

Threads director Mick Jackson has expressed worry over the upcoming remake’s focus on finding “hope even in the most challenging of times.”

“That one phrase worried me,” he tells Empire. “Hope is not part of nuclear war.”

Truth. Got heartily sick of guys wanting to show me their ‘boner’ on Twitter. Whereas here on BlueSky I’ve had someone show me ancient bones, despite not being an archaeologist, and that’s fine be me. Bring me your bones, bring me your ancient history.
Someone told me lately "Bluesky is just like Twitter." I argued that was untrue on the basis that last time I had a Twitter account most times I got a new follower their bio said "single & looking for fun" & here when I get a new follower it tends to say something like "professor of rare moths".

Ireland has been more proactive in supporting writers and artists for quite sometime through their tax system. IIRC they can be exempt from paying tax on the first €50,000. Seems they’re now going further in support. Fantastic. If only our UK government would support local writers and artists.
After a trial over the last few years, Ireland has launched a permanent scheme giving a basic income of €325 a week for artists.

2,000 will be eligible, and successful recipients will be chosen at random from applicants, who must be "professional artists" (definition tbc).

This is wonderful.

Thinking it wouldn’t be necessary if artists could still profit commercially from the success of our work.

But multi billion dollar corporations decided they’d like it all for free, thanks, to offer to the public for almost nothing.

Irish taxpayers will now subsidise that.

As a Brit watching US politics from afar I’ve been impressed by @aoc.bsky.social for quite sometime. She’s incredible. Please pardon my ignorance here, but have to ask: is there any damn reason why she can’t or shouldn’t run for president or VP in 2028?
