Got a problem? Kill them. Thread on two cases from my Economist article on assassinations in South Africa: 1, a corruption case which domino-like, has just led to the suspension of the police minister; 2, a cop killing which may reveal a military death squad.

On 11 November, 1965, Rhodesia announced its Unilateral Declaration of Independence and its break with Britain. For the global far right in the 1960s-70s, Rhodesia became a cause celebre, seen as on the frontline (alongside apartheid South Africa) against communism and multi-racial democracy.

UN Security Council members should investigate and, if appropriate, freeze the bank accounts of these UAE, Colombian and Panamanian companies - to interrupt the 'mercenarismo' worsening the situation in Sudan.

The mercenaries appear to be paid offshore. Contracts signed by Colombian recruits authorize GSSG to transfer their salaries to a Panamanian company, Global Staffing, whose director is Oliveros.

To recruit Colombians GSSG partnered with Colombian firm A4SI, reportedly controlled by former Colombian Colonel Álvaro Quijano, who used to work as a foreign legionary in the UAE military. A4SI is owned by Quijano's wife Claudia Oliveros.

Great list. More book advice:

Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, also start from chapter 2 or 3 and pop back.

The Wake by Paul Kingsnorth, start off by reading aloud until you get into the swing of the made up language.

Clockwork Orange, dive right in droog, pref with a beer & a deckchair in the sun.
12. People who want you to thrive will offer help and advice. If advice is all they offer, it's probably shit.

13. If that chick don't wanna know, forget her.

14. If you want to read Ulysses, start on Chapter 4 (meeting Leopold Bloom) and revisit the earlier chapters once you've found your feet.

This is a big deal technically & means we now have a hyper local measure of LIVING STANDARDS not just incomes.

The UK has a big dirty money problem. Tens of billions laundered through the economy. In theory there are lots of laws and regulations to stop this from happening, but in practice too many of these don't work effectively. Why? Too many in the private sector don't follow them and do so with impunity.
