This principle extended across the Atlantic too. Mary Peirce-Evans (later Lady Heath) was an astonishing early Irish aviator (and Olympian).

First woman in Britain to hold a commercial pilots license. First person to fly non-stop London to Capetown. Trained a lot of the early Aer Lingus pilots.

WW1, the availability of war surplus aircraft after it and the many flight schools that popped up, created an explosion of opportunity for female aviators.

E.g. the schools that didn't want take women quickly discovered that economically they needed to.
