A new analysis of fossils uncovered in Central Africa offers additional evidence that a human ancestor walked upright 7 million years ago, pushing back the date at which early hominins stood tall by about a million years.
When did humanity take its first step? Scientists say they now know.

s/o to all the editors esp @meghanhoyer.bsky.social for being my data partner on this; will share my thoughts soon on how much of a nightmare it was to standardize/geocode every one of the >46K schools 💀--folks said we were crazy to do this, but we felt the data was too important to *not* gather

You can also use the map in the story to look up vaccination rates in your local schools! This was a HUGE data lift: we reviewed and mapped tens of thousands of individual schools’ data, assembling the most comprehensive public database. And we published this data here: github.com/washingtonpo...

EXCLUSIVE: @laurenweberhp.bsky.social & I have spent the last year collecting school+county-level vaccination data from across the US and found that only about 28% of counties now have herd immunity for kindergartners from measles—that leaves about 5.2mn kids unprotected.

The share of counties where 95% or more of kindergartners were vaccinated against measles has dropped from 50% before the pandemic to 28%, according to our analysis of public records from 44 states and the District of Columbia. At least 19,000 schools are now more vulnerable to outbreaks.

As it happens, I have experience with high-level government demands to stop an explosive, accurate story from running, and I also have experience with 60 Minutes spiking a story I was involved in, so I have thoughts about the travesty at CBS. If you want some journalism anecdotes, here are a lot:
