I love video games from any era and their creative process.
Avid reader; dabbled in video game programming, youtube documentaries, writing, and more...these days enjoy discovering new things
I nominate Nim as 1901 Game of the Year
(and it is videogame related 😁)

Nim is an ancient matchstick game; the modern form had a complete mathematical theory published by C.L. Bouton of Harvard University in 1901... which later was used in the first electromechanical and computer games!

Do you know how your videogames relate to the ENIAC?

Here's a family tree of all computer systems created until 1970, compiled by late Dr. Martin H. Weir Jr. (1922-2007)

Yellow branch on the left is PDP mainframes, that evolved into Unix, micro computers, arcades, and consoles...

Do you remember Dopewars/Drugwars, a trading game that was super popular on calculators? (buy low / sell high)

It was based on "Taipan!" from 1979 (TRS-80), later released on Apple II (1982) and documented in a book with source code to type in.

Give it a try on your favorite emulator!

Japanese TV commercial for the New Famicom, a top loader NES launched in December 1993. The SNES was out! It also sells its AV port and redesigned the controller.

The craziest part though? This new design retailed for $50. Sharing that for no particular reason :)

I'm curious, what is your main beef with console "generations"?

They are ill defined, are very skewed to the US experience, and many systems straddle between them. But they are still useful to classify things by broad strokes. What would you use instead?

MSU1-enhanced games for SNES are cool, but I'd be really impressed if there were homebrew games/ports made for the (rare but actually released) SuperGrafx+CDROM combo

Reminder that there is a whole world of videogames outside of the English sphere that often get overlooked... go explore!
Make sure your RPG battle transitions, scene composition, and attack animations are at least as cool as this Taiwanese DOS RPG from 1995

If you want to make old-school computer music, I can wholeheartedly recommend Furnace Tracker:

There's a bit of learning curve (tied to your target chip) but there is so much you can do with it. And it's FOSS too!

And a not-so-miserable pile of early internet legend was born.

Trivia: “What is Man? A miserable little pile of secrets.” was first used by French minister and novelist André Malraux in 1967. Though given the 18th-century vintage of Alucard's adventures, perhaps André was quoting Dracula!

Ubisoft Brasil's marketing team deserves an award, they evoked our passion for tokusatsus to make this fantastic ad for the game: youtu.be/89bztUO2JuE?...

I love dungeon crawlers - here's a great list of suggestions if you want to try modern ones!
Wizardry Daphne is a good dungeon-crawler, the devs clearly love Wizardry a lot... but it's also a gacha game.

It's "free", but if you wanna dungeon-crawl old-school style without monetization & game-as-a-service drama, here's a short thread with some alternatives with a similar vibe🧵

This thread has some great memories in it.

I really wish I'd taken more pictures of what was really great about Akihabara from 1995 onwards. But I didn't want to look like a tourist, and now the cool things are gone. Ahh, regret.

Tengai Makyou II for the PC-Engine CD was one of the most expensive video games ever made when it was released, featuring incredible production values for 1992. Its creation was considered such an achievement that a TV drama was produced that depicted the game's development. 🧵
