I love video games from any era and their creative process.
Avid reader; dabbled in video game programming, youtube documentaries, writing, and more...these days enjoy discovering new things
Inspector Gadget was pretty popular overseas. Also more rceently, Wakfu is pretty fun

Arguably Hacker International were indie developers for the Famicom, but I see some pointing out it wasn't a vetted release (so not "indie" either).

Is the indie denomination only valid under a walled garden then? ... as usual these terms are ill-defined.

It doesn't get more indie than your actual genuine release being floppies in a ziplock bag with a photocopied manual.

But perhaps the distinction people make is that it wasn't thought possible to publish for a console as a small team...

(so that means indie doesn't include freeware or shareware?)

Start with the one closest to your year or birth. Then if you want to go back:

Play 1 up to 3 (JP version numbering) for an hour each or so, just to appreciate the improvements in gameplay omce you start 4, which is worth completing.
5 can be skipped but 6 is enjoyed more knowing the prequels

Hardware emulation (cloning) is a much better approach for players than software emulation (simulating), but it doesn't invalidate it; for programmers/homebrewers software is better.

It's a false dichotomy; instead we should focus on coming up with objective measures of "accuracy" / documentation

to me it's code for "we have no clue how to write a good story and program decent NPCs"

poor Minitel 😓

I like the way Scratch 3.0 / Blockly allows you to build game logic with a graphical UI.

Though it may be too simple for some uses (e.g. they dont have native 2d arrays)

this game is so unexpectedly good

Woohoo!! Congratulations on a well-deserved win!

in any case the true origin is latin (anima) or even Proto-Indo-European (ane-). Nothing is new under the sun 🤣
November 29, 2025 at 4:08 AM
I get the feeling that if "dessin animé" was the origin, it would have been compressed into a uniquely Katakana word (like Wapuro for Word Processor)...
add to that that "-ssin" is probably hard to pronounce, so maybe it would have been "Déjimé"? 😅

Yep, I was in Argentina last January and you often hear old rock classics around. And they have a chain of rock-themed restaurants that is pretty cool to eat at ("Rock&Feller's").
Brazil of course has Sepultura...

you don't hear Argentinian rock every day... yet there is great stuff like Soda Stereo:

There were layoffs and labor disputes in the past 2/3 years, so the AAA industry doesn't seem in great shape. But there's no way its "dead"
November 16, 2025 at 6:12 AM
Meanwhile the industry was exploding in Japan... including a port of an Apple II computer game (Lode Runner) cementing the fortune of Hudson Soft
November 15, 2025 at 5:43 AM
I like that the Japanese call it the "Atari Shock"... a more accurate view that the event was specific to the US industry

"Couples that prep together stay together" 😁 But joke aside a partner who has your back and works well with you in a crisis is gold

theres a Japanese bakery around me that sells "Kiwami bread". It's delicious but it also has kiwami calories so I have to look the other way...
