The North Pacific Marine heat wave is absurd. Most of the northern half of the basin is at/ near records. Some of this is natural oscillation, some likely aerosol / greenhouse forcing and feedbacks 1/

The world's storm cloud zones are shifting and narrowing, allowing more sunlight to reach Earth's surface and contributing significantly to increasing the planet's energy imbalance. A nice explanation here of the clouds/dynamics interactions and feedbacks.

Earth’s Clouds on the Move
Marine storm cloud zones have shifted poleward and narrowed, and the changes are contributing to our planet’s growing energy imbalance.

We covered this in @science.org at the AGU meeting in December. But this is a good chance for reporters to take another whack at it.

Armstrong Hall at Columbia University is not anymore housing the Goddard Institute for Space Studies. 160 or so of us gathered outside for the last picture. But we are still standing as a group, strong and determined, doing the same work and more great things into the future. Keep your eyes on us!

NASA climate scientists held an educational poster session for the community outside their Columbia University office, where they are being evicted by DOGE. This eviction makes no sense, saves no money, and is incedibly disruptive of their important work. @fedworkersunited.bsky.social

With less than 1% of the government budget NOAA monitors, protects and helps enhance the services we get from our seas. In addition to supporting the National Weather Service and a vast amount of important datasets from satellites and insitu measurements.

Update: During an extensive independent review of GISS & NSSTC ending in Dec 2024 it was concluded that it would cost NASA & GSA much more to terminate the current GISS lease While also doing massive damage to ongoing research going on. This move won't safe anyone anything. Quite the contrary.

It's a curious situation given the broader trends in climate science in the US today. Is it really the case that Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) research is considered viable, while climate change research itself isn't?
