Cold take, but AMS, SEM, and SMT all have huge issues, and none of them are "better" than the other. It's just that pretty much every year, one society/discipline likes to go the extra mile.

whoever wrote that slipped disc article about Andrew Balfour…that was some insensitive & deeply uncomfortable journalism that had very patriarchal consequences in Indigenous media spaces & begot the opposite of what Andrew intended when he sought to include the voices of Indigenous women composers.

On Twitter, I had posted about a composer who took a Lakota ceremonial song & inappropriately turned it into a choral piece. Today, a group of Native music educators, allies, with support from the Rosebud Sioux Tribe’s Historic Preservation Office are calling for the ACDA to take accountability.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. Don’t overhaul the entire music curriculum 3 semesters into the music theory lab track by changing to moveable do and then immediately start penalizing students for singing fixed do, like they did during my undergrad lol
For most musicians, the benefits of moveable “do” solfège are greater than those of fixed “do”

I’m back home on the rez teaching some kiddos how to play piano. One of my students just LOVES piano with all his lil heart. He’s been learning the intro to 7 Years by Lukas Graham & I’m so proud of how much he’s accomplished in 4 days. He thought it’d be funny to try it on 2 keyboards. 🥹

I, a Black folk musician, had to give the Lomaxes songwriter credits and pay the estate $1500 to use fragments of songs they did not write or personally perform on my last album. Months later, I am citing one of his recordings in a paper, and the only attribution he offers is to "Unidentified men"
