It me
In Jazz and Culture Vol. 8, No. 2, @vcmusictheory.bsky.social seeks to bridge discussions of jazz improvisation and the existential philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre, specifically his notion of the committed writer. scholarlypublishingcollective.org/uip/jac/arti...

Really excited to be teaching my course "Music and the Politics of Cool," which asks students to unpack the cultural implications required to name some as "cool"

Here's the syllabus!

My first ccm gig, I got the call the night before and didn't get to practice. Not being familiar with the genre conventions when we got to the big repeated outro sing along section, I saw a big open space and began playing a ripping guitar solo

The MD was not happy
One of the most “you must be new at this” moments I had when I started my side gig playing piano at a church 5 years ago was when I played “Joy to the World” with the authentic 7-measure first phrase instead of adding a measure so that everyone would sing it without getting lost

With regards to Drowning Pool's "Let The Bodies Hit The Floor," do you think the majority of people:

A) like the song ironically
B) like the song authentically
C) dislike the song ironically
D) dislike the song authentically

I think A, B, or D could be right but no idea which it is

Publication Day!!! My article "Jazz and Commitment: Sartre, Jazz, and Charles Mingus" was just published in Jazz and Culture. This article uses Sartre's theories of commitment to explain how Mingus's improvisations stake their political commentary! Super excited to see this out in the world!!!

the absolute irony of the position of this essay is that it a) believes in timeless gender roles that transcend historical basis and b) is written by a woman in a university, a thing that is strictly forbidden by her "women as servers" ideology

By her own accord, I should not listen to her
Turning Point at OU posted this girl's essay in full and man is it rough

I am teaching a class for the first time since 2023 in the spring...I am heavily considering my AI policy being "just send me an email that says 'I was going to use AI to do this assignment; and I will give you a C+, no questions asked and we will save a couple water bottles.'"
"The right to literacy came at a heavy cost for many Americans. Power recognised that oppression is best maintained by keeping the masses illiterate.
Dont surrender to AI your ability to read write+ think when others once risked their lives and died for it."

Update: WINONA FIGHTER is a good band and "MY APOLOGIES TO THE CHEF" is a great album

"You're all just masturbating to your Tiktok page/Don't mind me I just woke up in my shit-talk phase" is the exact lyrical gold that I would expect from a band called WINONA FIGHTER
