apple's translator is barely functional when you give it extremely neat text files, how is it going to navigate the messiness of human speech

like anything machine translation-related, i'll believe it when i see (hear) it
I’ve felt this way about almost every Apple event of the past decade but I have to say the real-time language translation for the new AirPods is really exciting for me personally. These are the kinds of tech advancements that feel like genuinely good things and they’re so rare these days.

Your monthly reminder:

Keep writing. When no one cares, persist. When things appear to be crumbling, keep at it. When it's difficult, push through. When you feel alone, listen to the stories in your blood. Just write. The world needs your stories.

People always ask me, “how do I know my manuscript is done?”

There’s only one way, my friends.

If your file name looks something like this:

Manuscript - Final Draft 3.7 FINAL FINAL - FINAL (5).docx

Then, and only then, is it time.

❌What we cannot control:
-Agent/editor responses
-Book trends
-Reader reviews
-Publishing timelines
-Anything involving other people

✅What we can control:
-Learning about writing craft
-Making time to write
-Finding a support group
-Ignoring imposter syndrome
-Never giving up

KidLit publishing and publishing in general feels so hard right now. I know there are days when the urge to throw in the towel is strong. Please don't. Your work matters. There is someone out there who will be changed by your book. Take that small step today. You have no idea how close you are.

People who think using em dashes is proof of AI writing have clearly never written anything longer than a paragraph in their life 😭

Keep the beloved em dashes out of your accusations! Real writers who hate AI definitely know how to use em dashes. Leave us alone 🙈

I have met several people who “hated history” in school yet later in life, once they discovered podcasts and well-written history books, grew to love it.

They never actually hated history; they just hated that it was taught as a list of battle dates.

The secret to writing “good” books?
Step 1: Write a bad one first.
Step 2: Fix it.
Step 3: Fix it again.
Step 4: Cry.
Step 5: Fix it more.

According to a new study, women contributed more extensively to Medieval manuscript production — a task usually delegated to monks — than previously thought.
More Medieval Texts Were Scribed by Women Than Previously Believed
A new study “provides statistical support for the often-overlooked contributions of female scribes over time,” said researcher Åslaug Ommundsen.

Ask the Agent question of the day: To an author stressing about Word Count; I drop what may be a v surprising truth bomb:

Nobody gives a sh!t what your word count is if your book is great.

And if your book isn't great, it doesn't matter what your word count is.

Too many details.
What do we NEED to know?
Priority info: main characters, stakes, elements that make the story unique. Even in a synopsis, smaller subplots and minor details (e.g., names, minor characters) migut be too much if they're overly intensive or tangential.
