Eric Dane has passed away at 53 after a short battle with ALS

He will be remembered by many as McSteamy on Grey’s Anatomy, but he should also be remembered for his disability advocacy

He worked tirelessly to raise awareness for ALS, including how hard it is to get a diagnosis.

"why are you wearing a [kn95] mask outside?"
"I have asthma & shouldn't have to move from studying outside just because the guy behind me wants to chainsmoke a whole pack."

it's 2026 and people are still stunned when I point out that facemasks have multiple uses

Discovered today that Instagram had turned on (without my opt-in) automatic AUDIO translation of any reel that shows up in my feed not in English USING AI TO MIMIC THE SPEAKER’S VOICE and WOW it was creepy and upsetting.

You can turn it off in “Language & Translations” in Settings. 🙅🏻‍♀️

NEW:

One of the most progressive institutions in the U.S., The New School, has begun destroying its humanities departments.

They have cancelled one of their most popular classes, "Global Soccer and World Politics."

We are going to teach it anyway.

The fact that these sentences always end with "... which we will cram with more work for them" and not "... so we moved to a four-day workweek" really illustrate the hollowness of some AI evangelists' promises that AI will deliver us to some kind of post-work utopia.
“By removing writing from reporters’ workloads, we’ve effectively freed up an extra workday for them each week” is such a strange sentence to read.

Writing is thinking.

It's not some marginal boring task you can skip. It's the heart of it.
It’s easy to think writing is mainly the transcription of ideas you already have—that is, until you try to write something worthwhile, and you find what you thought were saying transform into something far more interesting in the process. This skips that last step, and that is *not* an improvement.
“We plan to hire an AI rewrite specialist to ingest the reporting by Hannah and others and use AI to convert it into stories.”

The editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer said it will use AI to ‘write’ its articles.

It's also worth remembering that this narrative is Nazi in a way that actually pre-dates the Holocaust.

Hitler rose to power telling a story of a Germany shackled by guilt and shame (and of course the material concessions fallout) from WWI
This message from the US State Department about "not wanting allies to be shackled by guilt and shame" is a pretty direct call-out to the German far-right argument that Germany has spent too long feeling guilty about the Holocaust, and needs to move on and stop doing remembrance.

Most viruses, you catch them, your immune system learns them, locks their details in the control room, and then you can fight them in the future. Measles not only doesn't leave you that data, it blows up the control room. No immune memory for YOU good DAY.

our apartment got a new stove and the burner coils have this safety feature that sits down only if a pan/weight is on it, so I guess it won't turn on before you put a pan on it, so if you want to burn your hand you have to be dedicated to sit there holding the thing down with half of your hand

I have a friend who said, of Starfleet Academy, that this took them out of it - that seeing a person in a wheelchair in the 32nd century seemed unrealistic, since medicine in Star Trek "should be able to cure whatever was wrong with them."

That's not the case, for any number of possible reasons.
