New paper alert! We use till stratigraphy, pollen and optical dating to figure out that the Laurentide Ice Sheet stayed close to southern Manitoba during MIS. It did not significantly retreat, as has been previously hypothesized.

I also told students to me more like the cuttlefish - again, don't take the marshmallow because it is quick and easy and right in front of them

Cuttlefish show they can be patient and ignore a snack that’s right in front of them to hold out for a more tantalizing treat.

Stopped the bike ride for a little geology. Fascinating mud cracks that peel off in layers, and sticky clay underneath. Little minds shocked and amazed when they learned that mud cracks are found as 'fossils' too. #geology

Congratulations to Mr. Mesich who successfully defended his MSc today at UWaterloo. It's been a pleasure serving as your co-supervisor with Dr. Ross.

Fire-induced rock spalling! This area burnt about 1-2 months ago. All of the little rock shards on the ground are spalled pieces of the granite boulder, overlying burnt soil and moss.

Before seeing this in person, I didn't really consider the mechanical weathering effects of fire!

Campground foraging near the Manitoba Escarpment. A lot of work for a little bit butter. Makes me grateful for farms and grocery stores.

I just started writing a thread about all the misinformation I am seeing around the tragedy in Texas but this article covers everything I wanted to say and more. Please read it:
I have spent the last 24 hours looking at media reports and social media posts about the Texas Hill County tragedy and being appalled by the level of misinformation I am seeing. I have tried to put together an updated, more reasoned summary I hope you'll read.

I presented to 5 classrooms today on the topic of Geoscience Careers and Sustainability. It was the first time I really had to think about presenting geology from a sustainability perspective to kids so young - but it turns out there is lots of information like this poster!

Womens are Persons.
The Famous Five brought a case before the highest court to appeal a 1928 decision by the Supreme Court of Canada. That court had ruled that women could not be appointed to the Senate, because they were not "qualified persons." On October 18, 1929, they reversed this decision.

One of the classrooms is not picky about the type of scientist, the other SPECIFICALLY wants a geologist.
