Ice rich permafrost cores thawing in the lab. Imagine this happening slowly as permafrost thaws with climate change or disturbance and what this means for insfrastructure built above! (This was my most popular post on the bad place, let’s make it so here too!) #cdnsci #geoscience #cryosphere
Awesome
If you're looking for diversions, here's a tour of the moraines around Boulder Lake on the west side of the Wind River Range in Wyoming. Should have made this before I taught geomorphology for probably the last time this spring. Data from @opentopography.org, visualized with #Rayshader as usual.

In Grenoble/France where I work, a steep rise in bicycle commutes (green) happened, mainly because of strong support from the local municipality through infrastructure changes - bike lanes! This coincides with a drop in car usage (red), while walking (yellow) and public transp. (black) stayed flat.

For all of its great prime ministers, #Canada has never had one who was known for their ability to deliver stirring speeches, much less ones with global import and impact. In a remarkable 16-minute-long speech delivered

Mark Carney just shook up the world
His speech in Davos might be the most important one ever delivered by a Canadian prime minister. Its consequences will determine his place in history — and ours.

Crashing a Lancaster because of a supply drop parachute getting caught in the tail is a bummer. My granddad somehow survived flying Lancs in WWII.

Interestingly, Alert was originally set up as a Joint Arctic Weather Station (Canada-USA), staffed by both nations. It was established by caching gear by ship at Thule, Greenland, and airlifting it to Alert. Back when US was a firm ally. Here’s a great read: www.naadsn.ca/wp-content/u...
