Here’s yet another poll, this time out of the U of Chicago, showing that the majority of Americans oppose expanding fossil fuel production.

Yet this is the policy recommended by @mattyglesias.bsky.social & @jessedjenkins.com due to its supposed political popularity?

Quite a lot can be explained by the plain fact that our leaders and their hangers on are *enraged* that they can’t send people to prison for doing things that aren’t illegal, and they see this as a very serious problem that needs to be resolved, urgently.

Ahmed's family lived in a tent for so long that his kids are shocked by stairs, and opening the apartment door💔

Please don't let them lose this chance at shelter. Without rent $, they will be forced to live not even in a tent, but on the street

When we allow sewage or slurry to enter rivers, we risk antibiotics + pathogens entering a waterway together, in a warm growing medium where bacteria can develop resistance to medicines. So, as well as reducing use, we need to consider treatment of waste:

It’s a bizarre belief that when this bubble bursts, the people, governments, and global corporations behind it will simply accept their fate and wait patiently while others tidy up and implement a wholly different strategy.

That seems wildly over-optimistic.

I remember people saying after the ‘08 crash that this had to be the end of loot-and-burn neoliberalism, of stripping state capacity to keep the rich warm, and we should create a new system to avoid the “errors” of the old. And ever since, it’s just been screaming abuse at anyone who said this.

When environmental groups do sue, they target ecosystems, water, and climate—not urban housing. The Sierra Club fights groundwater extraction. The Center for Biological Diversity protects endangered species. They’re almost never in court over apartment buildings or affordable housing.

This isn't a debate about policy design or differing paths to the same goal

One is a plan to allow more emissions (and therefore, more harm / death), and one is a plan to *at least try* to reduce that harm.

The 'debate' is about whether we should let fossil fuels kill people, or try to stop that
