$170,000 a minute: Why Saudi Arabia is the biggest blocker of climate action

The desert kingdom depends on oil dollars but its people already face a climate ‘at the verge of livability’. What’s going on?

One way I have found to mourn someone is to set up a monthly sustaining donation to a mutual aid effort they cared about. If you can join me in honoring Alice Wong, @sfdirewolf.bsky.social with a sustaining donation today, please do. Thank you Alice, and I will not let the bastards grind me down.

There is a story that Alberto Morrocco's wife Vera, seen here at the breakfast table in the 1950s, was constantly searching for missing bowls, plates and jugs that had been commandeered for a still life, what her husband called a more important purpose than originally intended.

I enjoy how Guillermo del Toro Frankenstein'd together his character (who was English in the book!) from Danish polar explorer Peter Freuchen and every pop-culture sea captain you're ever seen.

many liberal dissidents in China are pro Israel as well. BUT also many critical of authoritarianism are pro Palestine. meanwhile there are also pro-regime nationalists who are very supportive of Israel... me and Yao Lin did a podcast on this landscape for 从河至海, but...
“During the hour-and-a-half programme, she declared that there are no ‘peaceful residents’ in Gaza, Israel has the right to ‘cleanse Gaza and turn it into a parking lot,’ and that Palestinians need to be ‘dissolved in hydrochloric acid’.”
Why Russia’s liberal opposition is so anti-Palestinian
Many Russian dissidents claim to embrace liberal values while fully subscribing to a racist view of the world.

HOLY SHIT. They found the genes for fibromyalgia - and it's *not* autoimmune, it's the central nervous system. It's very cool to see some progress made on the thing that's ruined my life since late teenage years!
Medical Republic: 'Fibromyalgia finally gets a genetic fingerprint'

'Additionally, certain risk loci overlapped with long covid (BPTF) and ME/CFS (OLFM4, RABGAP1L/GPR52), two poorly characterised disorders, albeit with different lead variants.'

Fibromyalgia finally gets a genetic fingerprint - Medical Republic
A massive global study links the chronic pain condition to 26 genes associated with brain signalling, marking a turning point in understanding its biological roots.

I saw the most bonkers conversation on tiktok where people were arguing that Romance doesn’t need an HEA and authors were fighting for their lives in the comments trying to explain what a genre convention is. Again, trying to sell me a mystery with no crime and see what happens.
God we need more craft discussions and less fights about which tropes are good or bad that play out in a way that makes it clear no one even understands what a trope is anymore.
Romance should evolve, but its so clear when people want the shine and financial benefit of Romance without respecting the genre, its conventions, or the readers. It's disturbing, but not surprising that we've arrived in a place where CRAFT DOESNT MATTER is a thing people believe.

i'm going to say something even more salty: we have a lot of writers who aren't doing this because they can't. And they can't because they aren't readers themselves. They view writing as just another form of content creation that they will convert into views and then into dollars.
I feel like we're in a weird place where a lot of writers aren't exploring the dynamics as much as they're checking off a list of marketing points, and that isn't fun at all!

Teen Vogue did some terrific work. Great story here on Teen Vogue and how the Vogue/Conde Nast bosses seem like the "liberal" types who have been eager to use Trump's rise as a pretext to silence progressives/leftists they disagree with. www.cjr.org/feature/the-...
What the closure of Teen Vogue means for journalism.
Condé Nast folded a beloved magazine that treated youth and feminism as political topics, not trends.
