Unions were out. Minnesotans were out. Immigrants were out. Neighbors were out. Rapid responders were out. People who were scared were out. Even kids were out. And it's still going! My report from Minnesota: inthesetimes.com/article/minn...
“Everybody Showed Up”: Stunning Crowds at Minnesota Day of Strike and Shutdown Against ICE
Extreme cold didn't stop the shutdown on Friday as some 100 faith leaders were arrested, residents stayed home from work, and an estimated 50,000 or more marched through downtown Minneapolis.

I'm not one for false optimism. But what I witnessed today in Minneapolis was tremendous, both in scale and exuberance. It was a stunning answer to the federal assault on Minnesota, a show of solidarity that gives us something to hold on to during times that are unforgiving.

NEW: I was one of 3 reporters granted access to the convening of 600+ clergy in Minneapolis this week.

It was a striking show of solidarity with MN clergy resisting ICE, but heralded something else: the emergence of a vast, faith-based network trained to resist ICE. religionnews.com/2026/01/23/i...
Inside the effort to organize clergy nationwide to resist ICE
(RNS)— Hundreds of clergy from around the country gathered in Minneapolis to learn from Minnesota faith leaders how to protest against ICE enforcement. Then they took to the streets and helped block t...

I've seen several popular movements in my lifetime and history now as someone who teaches comparative politics.

When people show up in the dead of winter, on a workday, when it is the most inconvenient because of cold, it shows how strongly they are motivated against the government.

Chatbots cannot show up. I think protests matter more now because algorithms have been designed to make us feel afraid and alone, while at the same time emboldening literal fascists. We've been talking about not having 3rd spaces; protests demand a 3rd space to be heard.

I’m so proud of Minnesota. I understand why some people belittle protests as not enough, but I really think this shit matters.

I saw a clip on Fox News and they had to admit thousands of people showed up. It’s not going to stop Trump, but it’s a signal to your neighbors that they’re not alone.
