One of the boxes of moths I brought to Lund University when I crossed the pond back in 2015 at the beginning of my PhD to work with @lepphylo.bsky.social to generate the first DNA data I would use for my PhD. These things were all classified together at the time. The DNA told us that was VERY WRONG.

Long suspected this may be true - some characters pulling double duty and resolving clades in different parts of the tree. Good to see it bear out in simulation.
One intriguing empirical application of these findings is that, for more than 50 taxa, characters that change multiple times independently across the tree (homoplastic characters) improve tree reconstruction compared to characters that change only once (synapomorphies and autapomorphies).
