While I'm laid up, I'm catching up on reading and note-taking. Here's what I jotted down from chapters 2-4 of @markwitton.bsky.social's "King Tyrant" before I had to take it back to the library.

The weather is set for an icy blast here in Yorkshire - an ideal time to revisit the Ice Age faunas from the region.

There aren't many wooly mammoth fossils from Yorkshire, however this enormous tusk was excavated from Leeds in the 1960s.

Best thing I’ve read this morning, from a human rights lawyer in Mexico. Translation is in the ALT-text.

My analysis as a human rights lawyer where I cite:
•The international & constitutional laws Trump violated
•His absurd justification for this attack & why it will absolutely fail in any court of justice
•The horrifying global implications that Trump just unleashed

Trump's Illegal Act of War In Venezuela
Trump’s bombing of Venezuela and abduction of Maduro shatters sovereignty, invites global chaos, and establishes a doctrine no democracy can survive

200. Five Questions About the Maduro Arrest Operation
Friday night's U.S. military operation in Venezuela was a textbook violation of international law. It's also entirely unauthorized by U.S. law, which ought to (but probably won't) matter.

In 1990 I taught an Environmental Geology class for the first time, & for that class I put together a lesson plan showing how U.S. control of fossil fuels was the main incentive for the Persian Gulf War. In 10 days I'll teach the same topic for the same class, just using a different place.

The House Armed Services Committee also was not briefed, I've confirmed.
News: Gang of Eight in Congress were only notified about Trump's Venezuela operation after it began, source familiar tells me. That means the heads of the Intelligence Committees in Senate and House were *not* consulted. Just crazy.

Donald Trump has multiple indictments in the United States for crimes against the US government. And also pardoned top drug dealers.
Vance pushes back and says this was not illegal, arguing "Maduro has multiple indictments in the United States for narcoterrorism. You don't get to avoid justice for drug trafficking in the United States because you live in a palace in Caracas."

It’s not about drugs. If it was, Trump wouldn’t have pardoned one of the largest narco traffickers in the world last month.

It’s about oil and regime change.

And they need a trial now to pretend that it isn’t. Especially to distract from his sinking under Epstein and skyrocketing healthcare costs.

One thing Venezuelans have generously taught me (among many things) is that all U.S. media companies (progressive and otherwise) have a strong set of investments in Venezuelan politics. Be mindful of this as you inform yourself. All the media is very, very biased in some way on this.
