Aspiring author who likes books, history, and nerd stuff. I've a goal to visit all the public art around Salt Lake City. I likely commit too many brain cells toward anti-squirrel schemes directed at the squirrels marauding my tomatoes every summer.
Reposting for any of my fellow Americans who have pie duty this year.
Since it's pie season, my secret to the best dang pie crust: cold butter. 🥧🥧🥧

Like ❄️COLD❄️ butter. The secret is in the process, not ingredients.

I use a cheap electric ninja food chopper that fits one double pie crust perfectly.
2 c flour
1/4 tsp salt
2/3 c butter right from fridge cut in chunks

Have you guys seen next year's National Parks annual pass? Woof. Looks like a dystopian bus pass.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Windows 11 broke some of the smallest, silliest, most fundamental things for no good reason.

So in File Explorer, you have a folder filled with files. In W10, you could jump back and forth between an open program and the files, and explorer "remembered" the last highlighted file by keeping it...

the idea is not all that counts. the idea is nothing at all until it has been lassooed, corralled, mutated, shuffled, blended with other ideas, and then expressed over the medium of however many thousand words that you have selected and arranged as best you can. the idea is a promise, not a book.

My upstairs neighbor is trying out an exercise video for the first time.

I really hope they decide they prefer their treadmill for exercise...

Kyle Kingsbury is not a journalist. He is not an op-ed writer.

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

In under 1600 words.

Yesterday's walk took me through Memory Grove Park.

You'll always see happy wet dogs (it's an off-leash park with water features so very popular with the local labs), joggers, and monuments commemorating the casualties of war.

A few more from yesterday's long walk! (It was a really long walk.)

Twelve hangry men.
The jury deliberated for SEVEN hours on the sandwich case, and I will bet money six of them were just talking about different good kinds of sandwiches they’ve had and how they’d throw.

So stupid.

A small kid would have to eat like an entire big tube of toothpaste to get fluoride poisoning, and even then, they'd barf it up, not die. No damage whatsoever except an upset tummy.

There's no cumulative harm in taking fluoride long term.
First RFK Jr. wanted to take fluoride out of water and has had some success in Republican jurisdictions that think scientific evidence is for chumps.

But that wasn’t enough harm for him, so now he’s restricting kids’ access to fluoride supplements.
FDA restricts use of kids' fluoride supplements citing emerging health risks
The Food and Drug Administration is restricting the use of fluoride supplements used to strengthen children’s teeth.

I needed an onion but couldn't bring myself to pay $6 for a net bag of 5 onions from the bougie grocery in my neighborhood, so I kept walking to the Mexican grocery.

OMG.

14 CENTS! For a huge yellow onion!

So much produce. It all looked good and they stocked fruit/veg I've never heard of, too. 🇲🇽😍
