Thanks to @macroengineered.bsky.social and @esharp.net for having me on The Cloud Gambit to talk about AI, authorization, authentication and more.

It got a bit philosophical, which is always fun.

I am aware of a fast-growing workflow platform with a background in governance, compliance, security that is hiring for a Director of Community and Dev Advocacy role to build out their program. It looks really interesting so if you're interested, let me know and I'll send you over to the recruiter.

Don't sleep on this as a means of standing out.

However, "showing up" is not usually a singular act.

Instead, it's showing up, again and again and again, that nets you the opportunities.
Sometimes, opportunity just means showing up.

Because sometimes, that's where the bar is set.

If you're thinking of leaving Heroku, here's a simple mapping:

If you want the easiest switch, go with Render.

If you want Docker and more flexibility, go with Fly.

If you want to be a sysadmin, use a VPS (don't need to scale) or Amazon ECS (do need to scale)

"What is simple in the early days becomes a tax of trying to trace down what and where something is." <- This is the joy of the MVP and the curse of legacy code (read "code that makes money").
The more I work with Ruby the more I am inclined to turn off autoloading and explicitly require things. Really, the more I'm inclined in general to be explicit about things.

What is simple in the early days becomes a tax of trying to trace down what and where something is.

Also applies to many other types of software.

I see lots of folks "sticking AI in" to appeal to investors or hype, rather than looking at the places where it make sense.
if i ran firefox, this is what i would say wrt AI in firefox in 2026.

1. ai is exciting!

2. it's also in its infancy.

3. we don't know yet how or if it connects to the web.

4. the web is 100% our #1 priority.

Lots of product teams are being tempted to save costs by vibe coding a replacement to some SaaS app.

Managers on such teams need to ask two questions: what will it cost to maintain and who will train people on the tool?

Someone will make a lot of money solving the proliferation of vibe coded apps.
