As one of the most vocal #oss maintainers confronting the AI Slop issue (curl recently ended its bug bounty program due to the surge of low-quality AI submissions), Daniel offers a candid perspective on what AI code generation means for maintainers, contributors, and the future of open source.

In this @redmonk.com post I discuss #OSS in the era of #AI slop, and how maintainers, many of whom are already burned out, are coping. I look at projects that have taken a stand, representative genAI policies coming out of some OSS foundations, & conclude with general suggestions for moving forward.

In a β€œif you give a mouse a cookie” situation where I decided to clean a shelf in the fridge, so I pulled out the fridge from the wall to remove it & it was filthy back there, so I started vacuuming the fridge nook, & once I got the mop out might as well mop the rest of the kitchen & the dining room

Good write-up by @kateholterhoff.com including a perspective how our relationships to machines is changing. I've said that in the pas and I still believe we should stop anthropomorphising #AI and threat it more as another tool in the toolbox!
"AI Teammate," "AI coworker," we are all still grappling with how to talk about machines that might be genuinely good at their jobs, because we haven't quite figured out what that means for ours. Just don't expect it to bring bagels to standup πŸ₯― @redmonk.com redmonk.com/kholterhoff/...

Approaches to naming these tools are changing so rapidly. To your point, the impulse to anthropomorphize doesn't seem to be going anywhere. We're still in the fashion phase. Folks are trying out different terms to see what sticks. Who could have guessed that "vibe coding" would still be a thing?!?
