In light of the astronomical increases for my health insurance next year, I thought it would be a good time to encourage people to subscribe. (A few hundred should cover it. Sigh.)

Didn't expect to lose hours of my life today attempting to learn how to write believable Early Modern English for two throwaway lines that will definitely never come up again in this series I'm translating.

A solution has not yet been found. I am suffering.

October was a bit lackluster for reading because I was so busy, but I finally managed to get my #BookLog for the month written. I hope anyone who actually reads these things enjoys the small excited rant I go on at the end of this one.

I have a feature essay for The Guardian today on the mirage of AI medicine, why care cannot be automated, and how overwhelming uptake of AI by American health capitalism threatens to undermine the very possibility of democracy.

Started my day with a DM asking me to do professional translation work for free because "I promise I'm a good person and I've always advocated for paying creatives."

Are you sure? Because that's literally the opposite of what you're doing right now by saying you can't pay me.

Reviewed another book courtesy of #NetGalley. Kind of hard to read near future speculative fiction that takes place in the United States right now, but this book was really good. I really enjoyed the calm chaos. Highly recommend.

It cannot be understated how important a good editor and proofreader are to ensuring project quality. But people in these roles who lack a strong attention to detail/can't articulate their issues, can bog a project down.

Your translators can't read minds. Be clear and articulate in your comments.

Do any of my followers read #Frieren: Beyond Journey's End and want to help me confirm the official translation of a quote for an article I'm translating?
It's:
"人間の寿命は短いってわかっていたのに… なんでもっと知ろうと思わなかったんだろう"
Something like "I knew humans had short lives... Why didn't I get to know him better?"

This morning, translation involves carefully analyzing a drawing of a knee MRI to figure out if this character tore their ACL or their PCL since the injury name used in the text lacks that specificity (that is included in all references I've found), but the speaker is a doctor.

Nothing like a client telling you that they think you did a wonderful job on the translation! Even better when that translation is based on the dialect you grew up speaking. Feels good, friends 🥹

Translating some picture book samples this week and getting in the Christmas spirit in the process.

I'm not one for Christmas vibes before the end of November, but I'll do it for a picture book--especially one as fun as this.

Life continues to keep me on my toes, but I managed to read one of my review copies from #NetGalley again. This time it's a book about a young woman finding herself and saving her community in a medieval Muslim city.

Very worth reading, especially given the times we're in.

Time to translate some Pacific saury haiku. And yes, the subject matter is completely irrelevant to the storyline. Sometimes that's just how it goes.
