This is possibly the funniest takedown of Pinker I’ve ever read.
“As he sets about demonstrating that our apparent irrationalities are in fact the work of our inner game theorists, the reader wonders if he has ever read a novel or interacted with another person.”

The idea that the federal government can go before a judge and say, “Yeah we arrested the wrong guy, but too bad, so sad” is not alarming nearly enough people yet.

Respectfully @warren.senate.gov, and I’d vote for you for president any day without blinking, please do something, anything, besides posting on social media.
It’s alarming that Elon Musk has access to government payment systems used to deliver Social Security and Medicare benefits.

He also drove out the senior career official at Treasury responsible for preventing a potential default on U.S. debt.

Congress must investigate.
Elon Musk’s Team Now Has Full Access to Treasury’s Payments System
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent gave Mr. Musk’s representatives at the so-called Department of Government Efficiency a powerful tool to monitor and potentially limit government spending.

academics are amazing because each of them, in getting a phd, wrote an entire book that nobody will ever read (their dissertation). you would think that would lead to total ego death but let me tell you buddy

Important context for non-scientists:

It is actually *really difficult to get a scientific paper retracted.*

e.g., new evidence indicating scientific misconduct, profound misportrayal of methods/results, or deeply flawed methodology.

Don't treat this lightly.

All these people talking about how writing is dead, books are dead. Bullshit.

Corporations are attempting to exploit writers and turn them into marketers precisely because writing/books are NOT dead, because writers are good at what they do and people are hungry — will always be hungry—for stories.

Counterpoint(?): it’s such an amazing riff that just hearing more of that with less words is just fine with anyone, cuz who wouldn’t listen to Knopfler just playing guitar? I’m conflicted about the original too, but fuck I love that riff…
so that’s a fair point. my counter is how many dudes had it in them at all to look back and say wow I wish I hadn’t done that because I didn’t understand what I was actually doing? because my understanding is that no one demanded it of him, and he felt genuine shame for it
