Bluetorial-Jim Watson

I met Jim Watson a few times but did not know him well. However, I was greatly influenced by his book “The Double Helix”. He was a complicated human being with some very, very bad features, but some good contributions.

What follows is my personal perspective.

After 13 years in the US, I’ve made the difficult decision to leave. Having packed up everything and rethought about priorities, rather painstakingly, while I’m sad to leave the life I’ve made here, I’m also relieved that I won’t have to plan my life around immigration policies anymore.

🧠🧬 New preprint! Our meta-analysis of the effects of chronic stress on prefrontal cortex gene expression has gone live.😁

Jinglin Xiong is the first author. She completed this work *as an undergraduate researcher* and is currently applying to PhD programs! 🎉
🧠🧬 I am more than excited to share that my first co-first author publication has been submitted and uploaded to bioRxiv! This meta-analysis study examined how chronic stress alters gene expression in the prefrontal cortex of mice (1/7).

The Python Software Foundation was recommended for a $1.5M grant from the National Science Foundation. The terms of the award said PSF could not work on DEI, whether or not the grant funding was used for it.

PSF therefore declined the funding.

Science suffers, but commitment to core values remains
TLDR; The PSF has made the decision to put our community and our shared diversity, equity, and inclusion values ahead of seeking $1.5M in new revenue. Please read and share. pyfound.blogspot.com/2025/10/NSF-...

COVID19 mRNA vaccines may improve response to some cancer treatments.

It’s a shame that the Trump administration cut funding for mRNA vaccine research and that RFK Jr. and his minions keep lying about them.

An analysis of patient records suggests that mRNA covid-19 vaccines boost the immune response to cancerous tumours when given soon after people start a type of immunotherapy, extending their lives

Dismantling the Institutional Review Board (IRB), that oversees all human subjects research, is bad. Really bad.
The entire HR department at the CDC is gone. Everyone at the IRB, which makes sure studies are conducted ethically and rigorously, and the ethics office, which oversee conflicts of interest for CDC leaders and advisory committee members, were also let go.
