Recent English lit PhD thinking about the intersections of pop culture & violence against women. I love cats, romance novels, pop music, and buying too many planners.

if this is discrimination, I’m genuinely unsure what you’re supposed to do when a student responds to a prompt with some religious gibberish

I’m not sure when the rebuttal to people shipping something became “it will never be canon!!!” Okay? Even more reason for me to ship it, then?

Seconding. Fire Island is so good. Plus, as someone who loves Austen but is bored to death by P&P retellings, this one was both interesting and delightful. And you can definitely enjoy it without caring about Austen at all.
if you need something to watch after binging Heated Rivalry, may I suggest Fire Island, one of my favorite rom-coms of the past few years?

We have all normalized it at this point because it never stops, but it is fucking psychotic that the mayor elect of New York City who has never said an anti-Semitic thing in his life has to answer "what do you say to Jews who feel unsafe" as a condition of doing any interview.

Question for any romance novel history people out there: does anyone know who might have been the first romance author to write/publish strict dual POV, ie: in equally distributed, alternating chapters? (Or, first-ish, I know tracking firstness in literature is complicated)

Feel free to RT/boost

My favourite year for oppressed literary masculinity was 2023 when the number of women on the Booker shortlist was smaller than the number of men named Paul

Not to be embarrassing but I do think we need to bring back positivity. Being a hater used to be a fun part-time hobby but now it feels like it’s all anyone knows how to do anymore.

Anyway speaking of music the new Maisie Peters album is going to save my life whenever it comes out. The two songs she’s released so far are EVERYTHING.

Thinking today how homelessness runs through this story, through Epstein's (Virginia Guiffre had been homeless before meeting him), and even through Gaiman's (his nanny was sleeping on the beach when Palmer recruited her, and he used threats of homelessness against another victim).
The woman whom the House Ethics Committee determined Matt Gaetz paid for sex when she was 17 years old was living in a homeless shelter, working at McDonald's, and needed the money for braces www.nytimes.com/2025/11/13/u...

As of this morning, Starbucks workers across the country are officially ON STRIKE. And we're prepared for this to become the biggest and longest ULP strike in Starbucks history.

This is truly all I ask for!!!!
I am so ready to read some romance novels that take Big Risks. Give me stakes. Real imperfections. Trust me to not need your characters to be exemplary, highly-therapized individuals. I’d like a theme or two, but I am not a baby bird, and I can chew on it myself

It just wasn't a big, newsworthy deal like, for instance, the college applications of a mayoral candidate to a school he didn't get into or attend.
To recap: Jeffrey Epstein offered a NY Times reporter photos taken in Epstein's kitchen of Donald Trump and girls in bikinis *and* implored the NYT reporter to put this information in the public discourse in 2015

What did the NY Times editors know about this offer?

My takeaway from every new Epstein revelation is that some powerful people victimized many powerless young women, many more knew, some actively enabled it--and we're still being told that MeToo and accountability for sexual violence have gone too far

“Then they said she didn’t do it legitly” This getting a pass while Wood gets mocked for being silly goofy fun??? Wild.
TLOAS would be higher if I didn’t think the first verse was some of the worst writing she’s ever done. Eldest Daughter would also be higher without the verses—I think the chorus is fine actually, but the verses don’t work.

Just had the thought that the Eddie episode will almost definitely not be about him finally coming out and will instead be about his abuela dying or some evil shit like that. Let this man not endure trauma for five whole minutes, PLEASE.

I feel like this is an important aspect to emphasize, loudly, to everyone who endorsed Cuomo. they chose to side with a known sexual predator for personal gain and frankly that should be disqualifying for public office. you knew who he was and decided the women he hurt were acceptable losses
it's been a really bad long shitty time for people who care about victims of rape and sexual abuse, and those who've suffered it. drubbing someone who perpetrated it gleefully and believed he was entitled to power despite it is part of this.
