1️⃣After tough negotiations, EU environment ministers agreed on their position to amend the EU Climate Law — including a 2040 intermediate target toward climate neutrality by 2050. A hard-fought compromise, and the details show it. 🧵

The dominant narrative is that the world is rolling back climate policy. But what does the data say?

The latest Oxford Climate Policy Monitor Annual Review from the Oxford Climate Policy Hub tells three key stories.

CSSN Primer: Climate Obstruction in the UNFCCC
Obstruction has become a defining feature of the UNFCCC process, shaping both the pace and substance of global climate agreements. It is often subtle and context-specific, making it difficult for […]

This is interesting.

The EU’s #CBAM has become a key point of contention in #UNFCCC talks (see bsky.app/profile/mjfe...).

Brazil is now essentially proposing a bad bank to offload this discussion, so that it won’t hamper #COP30.

Novel use of ye olde yet-another-forum.

To be consistent w/ limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees, governments collectively need to produce less than half of the fossil fuels they are planning for 2030 (5 years from now) and then double down to halve production again by 2050, @unep.org, @sei.org, @climateanalytics.org & @iisd.org show 👇
"10 years after the Paris Agreement, governments plan to produce more than double the volume of fossil fuels in 2030 than would be consistent with limiting global warming to 1.5°C"

🌍 Carbon storage is not a limitless climate solution.

A new IIASA-led study in @nature.com shows that safe, practical underground carbon storage could reduce warming by only 0.7°C – almost 10 times less than earlier estimates of 6°C.
