Our new paper highlights a 𝗴𝗮𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: the failure to distinguish what 𝗰𝗮𝗻 be done (feasibility) from what 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 be done (desirability)

Very happy to have co-authored this new one with the wonderful Kari de Pryck. Using an innovative quali-quanti methodology, we outline three historical phases in the debate about using the ocean as a carbon sink that follow recurring cycles of hype, controversy and disappointment.

Yesterday the German government
@bmwk.de released a document outlining the proposed 'cornerstones' of its long-term #NegativeEmissions strategy. Marine #CDR is mentioned in several places in the text. Only in German, so see my translations of the main points below ⬇️

We then filtered these questions through the ESG lenses - Architecture & Agency, Democracy & Power, Justice & Allocation, Adaptiveness & Reflexivity, Anticipation & Imagination - and highlighted key ‘cross-cutting’ issues that form an integrated ESG CDR research agenda

We draw on the results of a workshop at the 2022 ESG conference that mapped a range of CDR actors, activities, and issues. In the paper we refine them into research questions spanning modeling & assessment, societal appraisal, policy, and innovation & industry.
