Selection and transmission of the gut microbiome alone can shift mammalian behavior

Happy to share this paper by doctoral student Mirabeau Mbong Ngwese who assessed gut microbiome associations with soil transmitted parasites for adults and kids in Gabon and corroborated findings with data from other studies from Africa www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
Infection with gut parasites correlates with gut microbiome diversity across human populations in Africa
Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) are common in (sub)tropical regions and primarily affect impoverished populations. These parasites reside in the gut, where they interact with both the microbiota a...

You spend your life learning the natural history of the prokaryotes with all this complex taxonomy and then right when you are so proud of your well earned wisdom all the names change just in time for your brain to be too old to handle it

Cool new evolutionary angle on rumen microbiomes 🧫🦠
Excited to share our new @natecoevo.nature.com
paper. We identified microbes found across nearly all ruminants that act as the functional backbone of both the rumen ecosystem and the host, with major implications for food security and climate change mitigation. (1/8)

Thanks for posting this gem. We have disappearing coffee mugs that threatens their population and the entire fork collection went extinct in one unchronicled event.
One of my absolute favorite studies.
70 teaspoons placed in tearooms around the institute & observed weekly over 5 months. 80% of spoons disappeared; spoon halflife~81 days. Communal room halflife lower than in specific labs. 250 spoons annually required to maintain 70 spoon population.

In mice yes: this type of “one-sided” selection experiment has been done in plants (with positive outcomes) and was tried in flies (no effect). So this is the second time it’s been tried in an animal and first time in a mammal @suzukilab.bsky.social 🦠🧫

Yes, some people's legacies are complicated. For example, Watson. After all, though he was racist, don't forget his other traits. For example, he was also sexist. And also anti-semitic. And a data / idea thief. So let's not forget all the different facets.
